Hi, Can someone point out some "dont miss it" spots in the Mount Shasta area.Maybe a boat ride on lake Siss,a picnic meadow area thats a favorite,a town we should see? We will be driving up from Oakland airport for a few nites on Shasta before hitting the North. Coast. We are planning on staying at the Mt.Shasta resort.How about an area to avoid? Thanks for any suggestions.
I would definitely plan to take a look at McCloud. Cute town. I've done the dinner train in July and it's very scenic. Better with the longer days since you don't really want to be in the dark. There are scenic train rides that are very fun. On a nice day it's great to be in teh open air cars taking in the scenery.

I am having trouble on various forums getting more info on Mount Shasta. Perhpas its not such a great destination? I got a response of "eh" on one forum.
Mount Shasta is a good "on the way" destination, in a harmonic convergence magic crystals funky ex-hippie kind of way. If your itinerary is already set, some places to visit (though none are really that close) are Burney Falls and Lava Beds Natl. Monument (hard to get to but there is a secret route including ten miles of dirt road that is much faster than the highway - ask a local). If the itinerary is not set, I would suggest you stay in Redding. You can see the Sundial Bridge (by architect Calatreva), Turtle Bay Museum, splash around at Whiskeytown Lake (Brandy Creek Beach is my favorite), see the newly discovered Whiskeytown Falls, get to Lassen Volcanic National Park.
My wife Suzie already gave you some ideas, but here are some others: if you do go to Burney Falls, go through McCloud on your way and be sure to stop at the candy store on main street. Then as you head out highway 89 towards Burney, stop along the McCloud river scenic area, about seven miles east of town and look at lower, middle, and upper falls of the McCloud river. These will get you warmed up for Burney Falls. If you are staying at the resort in Mt. Shasta, take the drive up to Castle Lake. Very pretty and great for a picnic. Also go to the City park in Mt. Shasta and see the head water springs of the Sacramento river. I could get you lost up there for six months if you are in to hiking; but will refrain from that unless you request it due to the lengthy info it would entail. Have a great trip!
