It's a great drive to Carmel as long as you are not in a hurry and there are no slides causing road closures on Hwy 1 in Big Sur. If you are staying in Morro Bay, this will be easy to find out. It wouldn't be the end of the world even if there was was as Morro Bay & Cambria are great places to hang out. Assuming that there are no road issues, you have several choices. Most poeple stop at Nepenthe because it is visible from the road. While the gift shop is great, there are better places to eat. Just past Nepenthe are the two best in Big Sur. On the right will the the entrance to Ventana. You wind up the hill to the restaurant and it's a terrific place for lunch. Across hwy 1, on your left, is the entrance to Post Ranch...this is probably the finest Big Sur has to offer, Check out both online. Otherwise, go straight to Carmel where there are endless choices to eat. Highlands Inn has a great outdoor lunch or go into the village of Carmel and just walk around reading menus until one grabs you. If you are driving back to Morro Bay, remember that Highway 1 is a very narrow and slow driving at night. I would suggest getting to carmel as early as possible, strolling, having lunch there, and starting back down hwy 1 in time to enjoy the scenery which is much easier to see coming south back to MB.
