Driving from san francisco to monterey and then to morro bay

Hi , We are driving from San Francisco to Monterey, then Morro Bay, then on to Santa Monica at the end of July this year.

Finally ending up in Las Vegas.

I have booked hotels for the first 3 days in San Francisco and for the 8 nights in Las Vegas but we have 4 nights for the above places not booked.

My question is will it be ok to just arrive in Monterey etc. . without booking ahead or do you advise us to book ahead.

My husband wants us to be free and easy about where we stay and not have everything planned, but I worry that it will be hard to find a reasonable place to stay at that time of year. Please can anyone advise us.

Yes, you SHOULD pre-book your lodging well ahead of time as the coast is VERY popular in the summer months.

If you don't, you run the risk of spending valuable vacation time driving from hotel to hotel looking for a place to stay and you might end up with a dump.

This would be even more so over weekend nights. Many hotels along the coast have 2 night minimums on weekends, so you'll definitely want to have rezzies in place for any weekend nights as you travel down the coast.

Tell us your budget in U.S. dollars, what kind of lodging you prefer (modern, traditional, budget, B&B) and we'll come back to you with some recs.

If you have the time, may I suggest spending a few more nights between Monterey and the other places you want to see in Ca than 4 days. Southern California needs more than 2 days to see if you plan on doing a night each in Monterey and Morro Bay and then reduce the 8 nights from Vegas unless you love that place and have plans on hanging out there or the environs for 8 days

Yes, you will need reservations in late July! The Carmel Bach Festival will be in session from July 14-28, which will have an impact on room availability.

If you like good music, you might want to get tickets for some of the concerts or recitals while you're here. http://www.bachfestival.org/

I would definitely make hotel reservations and I would take at least a couple nights from LV and add them to Monterey/Morro Bay/Santa Monica portion. With only 4 nights for this, you will be very rushed.

Vegas is a great place for a weekend... but unless you have a reason to be there so long -- 8 days is waaaayyy to much in Vegas. It has a 3 night maximum IMO. The crowds and the constant noise of the casinos and the strip in general really start to wear after 2-3 days. I go every year or 2, but only as a quick get away. There is so much more to see the SF/ Bay area or in route. Rethink your trip plan!

Thanks for the advice, we were thinking that we might pay about $80/$120

per night, although I dont really know.We like any room type that is very clean and comfortable beds maybe with a pool if possible and parking faccilities.

Everyone seems to think we have booked too many nights in L V but our main purpose is to spend time there and visit the grand canyon. We have been to LV before but found 4 days not long enough as we didnt find time to visit the canyons!

Some reccomendations would be welcome.

$80/$120 is a pretty low price point for the busy summer travel season.

Instead of Morro Bay, I suggest you look at San Simeon or Cambria instead. San Simeon has a pretty decent Motel 6 that should come well within your price range. It used to be a Holiday Inn, so the rooms are larger than your typical Motel 6.

In Cambria, look at Creekside Inn, Bluebird Inn or Cambria Palms. All get good reviews on TA. Cambria is a charming town nestled in the pines and is a lovely place to visit.

Morro Bay will have fewer decent lodging options in your price range.
