May trip

Was looking to take husband to Catalina Island for 70th birthday overnight trip next week, but sorrowfully that will not happen. He suggested Mendocino as he has never been there either. This is a

1st Time Trip for him. Would just like to stay one night but would like someplace where there is everything to do and see. Have never done wineries so do not know what to ask about or look for. He enjoys history, beach, walking and relaxation. Any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance

Is it possible for you and your husband to stay at least 2 nites instead of just one? With only one, you'd just get there and start to settle in and relax... and it would be time to go. Depending upon what time of yr. and day of the wk., most inns require a 2-nite min. as well. I would absolutely recommend staying at Alegria Inn and Cottages (www.oceanfrontmagic.com). They are loc'd in the ideal spot where you're not right in the middle of the hustle and bustle (and noise), but are within a few blocks of everything in Mendocino. You can walk to excellent restaurants (our favorite, Cafe Beaujolais is less than 2 blks away), shops, art galleries (be sure to visit "Art That Makes You Laugh") and the beautiful Headlands parklands where you can walk along ocean bluffs with fantastic views. Alegria has the most beautiful gardens and they overlook the ocean cove, with their own private stairs down to the beach. Try to stay in either Cove Cottage or Garden Cottage. The Inn offers perfect relaxation and the innkeepers, Eric and Elaine are wonderful, as is the gourmet breakfast they serve. They'll be able to give you all kinds of great suggestions that relate to your tastes. But please stay at least 2 nites. Mendocino is a long drive from major airports and you'll really want time to unwind and simply enjoy the beautiful environment. You'll also want to have time to visit the renowned Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden in the Fort Bragg area, several miles no. of the Mendocino Village.

Yet another wonderful place to stay if you want to be removed from development, would be the Lighthouse Inn at Point Cabrillo, which is loc'd only a couple miles no. of Mendocino. It is a historic (circa 1909) property with functioning lighthouse and 3 lightkeepers' houses, one of which has been restored to perfection as a B&B inn. Another is a museum. We were just there (see TripAdviser reviews) and it was an incomparable experience. You get a tour of the lighthouse, gourmet breakfast and you can walk to your heart's content along the ocean bluffs within the nature preserve that surrounds the Inn and Lighthouse. This is a very special, fabulous place! The website is www.mendocinolighthouse.pointcabrillo.org

Agree, I would stay 2 nights. It is a long drive to get to Mendocino and it is a beautiful area worth the extra time. You are not far from redwoods so you might want to experience walking amoungst these trees as well as enjoying the beaches along this coastline.

Have a wonderful birthday celebration!
