Accommodation in the general Malibu area

My family and i are coming to LA in November, and we have a few days on our own before meeting up with cousins. We are going to go to Encinitas, and then i thought we could go up to Santa Monica/Venice/Malibu and stay somewhere in that area, probably inland - we're looking for pretty cheap, like $100/night. I found some places in Thousand Oaks and am wondering if that's a somewhat nice place to stay [scenic? safe?]. Open to any suggestions of locales. Thanks!

There's a Good Nite Inn at the intersection of Malibu Canyon (a/k/a Las Virgenes Canyon) and the 101 in Agoura Hills that is cheap, in a nice safe area with lots of amenities in walking distance (starbucks, food, & grocery), and is a short drive through the canyon to Malibu. We live in Malibu and when our friends and family need a convenient, affordable, and safe place to stay that's where we send them. It's not scenic, but it meets all your other qualifications and 'scenic" is only 7-miles away. There are also several hotels inland in Santa Monica around 26th street that would meet your qualifications.
