Drinking - L.A nightlife

Hotel bars the norm for drinking when staying in L.A? Stopping over in L.A ( staying Hollywood Sat night, Santa Monica Sun ) and wanna go out to a bar for drinks and then possibly a club?

Whats the places to go / avoid? Can anyone suggest good bars to start and then other bars to finish or clubs?

Santa Monica - really would love to find a bar for a good sunday session by the beach - love to find a good pub with a band or a really relaxed friendly atmosphere... Its sunday and its by the beach, doesnt get any better?

Thanks

ben

When is this trip? Santa Monica has one bar after another - literally - all along Main Street, and also surrounding the Promenade (but avoid the Promenade itself for bars, it's only tourists, not locals). Stick to Main Street. But on Venice Boardwalk and down near the Venice Pier, there are bars with live music, only for the next couple weeks.

The Sidewalk Cafe at Venice Beach is fun, but a sit-down restaurant with an indoor bar. Gladstone's for Fish in Malibu is usually crowded Sunday afternoons. If you seek a Caribbean toes-in-the-sand, beach party, we don't really have those.

As Yoga mentioned, Main St. in Santa Monica has plenty of bars and restaurants, but Sunday night won't be the best night of the week. Hollywood on a Saturday night will be hopping.

I'm also keen to know whether people can recommend bars or clubs to go on a night out in LA Hollywood or west Hollywood

Thanks

There are dozens of clubs and bars in Hollywood and West Hollywood, but how can we begin to recommend a place when we know nothing about you or Carlislebj? Do you want gay clubs? Straight clubs? Hip hop? House? Salsa? What are your ages? Gender?

I'd start with the LA Weekly Directory and go from there.

Thanks for the replies.

This trip is on the weekend of the 7th September (b4moving onto Vegas :) )

2 males, 35, straight bars, live music, friendly older crowd bar as opposed to a night club is what we are after. Staying in Hollywood, not far from the Roosevelt .

Santa Monica sounds good. Been there before however only during the day, not ventured out looking for bars at night. Sounds like its best to just go down the Main Street and start at the first one we come across :)

I would start at the Otheroom on Abbot Kinney - it opens at 5 and is hopping. Then head over to Chaya Venice which is also packed on Sundays. Sunday is a very busy bar night, but starts early and quiets down earlier than other nights.
