Advice for places to visit

We will be in LA on vacation in June. We'll be spending 3 days at Disney and 5 days in the Hollywood area. We've been there one other time so we've seen some things but I'd like to get feedback on a few other places we're considering, which are the La Brea Tar Pits, Joshua Tree National Park, Channel Islands, Death Valley, Griffith Observatory. We'll have a rental car so we'd be able to drive some distance away. We'd like to keep the driving limited to 2-3 hours from the LA area, though. I'd appreciate opinions on the places listed above as to whether you think they're worth going to, and also any suggestions for other places. Thanks.

All the places you listed are worth visiting. Death Valley is more like 5 hours away however, so probably not a day trip! Joshua Tree is about 3 hours each way - up to you if that's ok for a day trip.

I highly recommend Joshua Tree for a day trip. Be sure to bring some water and snacks. It's a national park and there are no concessions within the park boundaries.

Channel Islands are a bit rougher to do. You will need to drive to Ventura, take a boat, and hike with guide. There is no water or restroom facilities on island.

Ventura is a nice beach community to visit in its own right.

Santa Barbara is a wonderful place to visit, especially on Sunday when they have a great arts and crafts show along their main, beachfront road:

Do you like history? It's interesting to visit California missions and there are several in Southern California:

If you choose one, then Google the city in which it is located to find more things to do in the area.

If you like mountains, you might consider visiting Big Bear - about 2 hours each way along the "Rim of the World" highway.
