The London is the #1-rated Hotel in the city of West Hollywood (which is where it's located, along the world-famous Sunset Strip). This is a nighttime playground with restaurants, bars, live music venues and boutique shopping.
The SLS and the Sofitel are in the city of L.A. (not Beverly Hills as they sometimes imply). The properties are a few minutes' walk from one another. The neighborhood, known to locals as "Beverly Grove' is a popular place with 3 major shopping malls, and dozens and dozens of dining options of all kinds and in all price ranges. There are no clubs nor live music venues and the only bars are those that are inside of restaurants. It's a 5 or 6 minute taxi ride to the Sunset Strip from this area.
The biggest different between the SLS and the Sofitel is the ambience. The SLS is more trendy; the Sofitel more 'corporate' (although the Sofitel's spa is quite nice).
Hope this helps you make up your mind.
Will you have a car?
If you have a car, I might lean to the London, without a car I'd flip a coin between the SLS and Sofitel. The SLS is a bit hipper.
I'd also look at the Petit Ermitage, L'Ermitage and Le Montrose.
In fact, I would favor the smaller, boutique hotels.
