help with LA itinerary

hi. my husband and I will be traveling to LA friday may 24th of this year.

so far this is our to do list while we are there:

Kodak theatre

Dolby theatre

Mans Chinese theatre

Rodeo drive

WB studio tour

Hollywood forever cemetery

Capital records building

Grammy museum/nokia theatre

Santa monica pier

3rd st promenade

Hollywood sign

dodgers game (at night)

sunset strip (probably will go at night)

universal city walk (probably will go at night)

i'm trying to decide how many days we should stay in LA before leaving to go see SF & napa based on our to do list.

we are between staying fri may24-mon may 27 & fri may24-tues may 28th.

my other question is about the best mode of transportation to be able to get to the things on our to do list. we were considering buying the starlilne tour hop on hop off ticket for 48hrs to get around during the day to do the sightseeing and then using the metro at night. any opinion on this will also be greatly appreciated.

Dolby Theater is the new name for the Kodak Theater.

Is your choice between three nights and four? With a trip to the Universal City Walk but not the amusement park I think you could do three nights, four days.

But it does depend how long you have in San Francisco and Napa. If you're not tight on that end of the schedule stay the extra night in L.A. Why not?

I can't comment on the tour bus you're asking about but the best mode of transport to get everything on your list done is a car. I'd rent one while you are there.

These you group together, they are all in the same area and take only a couple hours to see:

Kodak theatre/ Dolby theatre- same thing

Mans Chinese theatre

Hollywood forever cemetery

Capital records building - but you won't be allowed in.

Hollywood sign - you can see it from everywhere, you don't visit it.

here are the time estimates for the rest:

Rodeo drive- depends how much shopping you like to so, the area can take a day, or an hour.

WB studio tour - one morning.

Grammy museum/nokia theatre - I suggest going at night.

Santa monica pier/ 3rd st promenade - Santa Monica and Venice are a full day

dodgers game (at night)

sunset strip (probably will go at night) - what is it you want to see here?

universal city walk (probably will go at night) - again, what is it you want to see here?

You certainly can take public transit and the HoHo buses, many people do. But, if you are concerned that driving is too difficult, you shouldn't worry. You won't need a car in SF, but you will have a better, easier, more spontaneous visit to LA with a car.

If you stay in Hollywood you can do without the car easily for nearly everything. The light rail lines don't go everywhere, though the do go from Hollywood to Universal. But there are bus lines (and feet and taxis) as well.

The ones that can be time consuming to get to by transit are Warner Brothers and the Dodger game.

Santa Monica can take a while but you can get there on the bus.

How are you arriving into LA? If you fly in, you can take a Super Shuttle to the hotel (assuming it's in Hollywood), spend a day or two seeing the sights accessible by transit, then rent a car for the day before you leave.

Of course that plan depends on the Dodger's schedule!

FYI, the new name is the TCL Chinese Theater.

Starline Tours is based right next to the Chinese Theater and the Dolby Theater. (All part of the Hollywood and Highland Center). Also a great view of the Hollywood Sign.

And there is a LA Metro Red Line Subway stop at the corner.

7. Re: help with LA itinerary

yes our choice is between spending 3 nights, 4 days but that 4th day we'd be leaving in the am for SF so we would only be there half the day friday (we arrive by plane 11am), the whole day sat & sun and then leave mon am by plan to SF or the other choice is to spend 4 nights, and leave the 5th day for SF in the am (meaning in LA half day fri, all day sat, all day sun, all day mon, leave tues am by plane for SF).

sunset strip & unviersal city walk was just places we figured we could go to at night to eat and go to bars.

and yes we are planning on staying in hollywood, our choice is bw the roosevelt hotel and the loews.

the dodgers game we were thinking of going to the first night we are there (friday night).

Flight to LA: Depart: 08:30 AM, Miami, FL (MIA).Arrive: 11:10 AM, Los Angeles, CA (LAX).
