Best places to see celebs

I hate to sound like such a tourist, but where are some of the best places to see celebrities? Do you find they are for the most part friendly and approchable? My husband and I are coming in August and staying at the Magic Castle.

Honestly the best places are to attend a TV show taping - especially Jimmy Kimmel or Jay Leno. Then its a guarantee. Hoping to run into a celebrity out and about living their daily lives is much more hit and miss, even if you go somewhere that celebrities tend to frequent.

That said, here's our FAQ's on celebrities:

I'm with Mach. You won't find them in the supermarket or taking a stroll down the street. The restaurants, shops and clubs they frequent are expensive so unless you plan to spend some serious money and loiter for a while (maybe, a long while), you're not apt to see anyone during your visit here.

On the other hand, Mach's advise is sound. There are also local shows, concerts and events in which celebrities participate. You can research these in a number of places. The LA Weekly newspaper (LAWeekly.com) has 'entertainment lists' and there is a last-minute ticket service called Goldstar.com that has everything from theater to sporting events to wine tastings and scavenger hunts -- at a discount of between 25 and 50%.

Have fun!

During my 7 years' of involvement here on Trip Advisor, I can recall only a handful of visitors who have reported on this Forum that they saw or had a conversation with a celeb. I currently have posted 16,000+ times and during all of those postings, there might have been 5 such sightings reported.

We saw 2 of the Kardashians while we were shopping at The Grove, they were surrounded by paparazzi but seemed to be happy to have their picture taken with fans. We also saw Sally Field while we were having dinner at La Scala in Beverly Hills. She was at the next table and at the end of our night my husband (who by now had a few beers under his belt) went up to her and said "Oh my god I loved you in Brothers and Sisters" she was very nice and thanked him. I was horrified of course! I am sure she was thinking please get this drunk Aussie out of here!! Saw a couple of D list Aussie reality 'celebs' at Disneyland but pretty sure that doesn't count!

One decent chance to see celebrities is to take a Studio Tour from Universal, WB, Sony and Paramount. Now, you will normally only get a glimpse of the celeb(s), usually walking from their Dressing Room or Meal Service area to the Closed Set. Normally they won't even recongize the group, though sometimes they will wave to the tram/shuttle/golf cart. They won't pose for pictures and won't stop to talk and/or sign autographs.

Another place that surprises many folks, DIsneyland is popular for Celebs and their families. They tend to be escorted by Guest Relations CM's (aka employees) and also tend to not interact with park guests, but you can usually see them and grab some long range photos.

>>If you had to name one spot in Southern California that has been visited by virtually every famous Hollywood celebrity at one time or another, where would it be? Spago? Grauman's Chinese Theatre? The Hollywood Bowl?

Well, probably no other place in the world has attracted as many celebrity visitors as... Disneyland. <<

Once at Disneyland I ran into Larry King and his son without escort, and ended up pointing him to the nearest Restroom. In fact, wasn't even sure it was Larry King at the time. (Later, saw him and his entire group being escorted by the Guest Relations CM's).

My wife's work is right across the street from the Old Santa Ana Courthouse, which is a popular filming site due to the building and park like area surrounding it, and see celebraties all the time. So if you hear about a street closure due to filming, might be worth a stop to look, but not, the area is blocked off, and you won't get close.

But as mentioned above, look for a Talk Show filming (Along with Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Jay Leno, Conan and Ellen are main shows that tend to have at least one well known celebrity on each show. Or attend a Sit-Com taping, where you will know the expected celebraties.

Maybe getting a game show ticket, though they tend to be hard to get, due to the fact of the chance to win major prizes, but you have Drew Carey and Wayne Brady hosting Game Shows filmed in the SoCal area.

One more thought, Charity Events. Many celebrities attend scheduled charity events, so if you could get a ticket to one of those events, you might even get a chance to pose for a picture with the celebrity as part of the event.

If all else fails, just put on some big sunglasses, stroll slowly down Rodeo Drive and be a celebrity yourself. Have a friend take your photo to get the onlookers excited. If you get asked for an autograph, just scribble and smile. Maybe you'll get invited to lunch with someone famous. Nothing is real in Hollywoodland.

Or head out to the corner of Hollywood and Highland, where the "impostors" pose for pictures. Some decent look-a-likes, and some costumed folks, some better than others. And of course, always looking for a tip.

Theme Parks are a good option for costumed characters, obviously Disney features its own characters, Knott's has the rights to the Peanuts gang, including Snoopy. Six Flags has the rights to Warner Bros characters, like Bugs Bunny and Friends, plus the DC Comics characters, including Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Hornet and more. SeaWorld has the Sesame Street characters including Elmo and Big Bird, plus they have a few of their own. Universal has some famous look a like characters like Lucy, Marilyn Monroe, Groucho Marx, the Blues Brothers, and then costumed characters like Shrek, Curious George and more.

One reads all sorts of probably bogus things about where you can see celebrities. One such suggested locale that made sense to me was the little shopping center known as Brentwood Country Mart. It makes sense to me because it's near neighborhoods where movie star types might live. And if you don't see anyone famous there, it's one of the quirkiest, most enjoyable shopping centers you're likely to run across.

Brentwood Country Mart is not a bad idea, but don't be surprised if you don't recognize the person passing you as a celebrity. They look very much like everyone else when running errands. I was surprised to see Robert Sean Leonard (Wilson on House) at my local grocery store because I live in south Santa Monica, nowhere near where celebrities tend to live. When I talked to one of the guys at the store, he said lots of celebs shop there, including Robert Downey, Jr. It seems they drive to neighborhoods that are off the radar so as not to be disturbed. Even celebrities need some normal time.

Same for town I live in, lots of celebrities live here. I've seen them in the Starbucks, grocery stores, CVS pharmacy, church, walking their dogs on the Strand, etc.

No special day or time, they do things same as other people.
