How to get from LAX to LGB (long beach airport)?

We are renting a car from SFO and returning it at LAX but flying out from LGB. It costs $400 more to return it to LGB.

Is there any public transportation from LAX to LGB or do we need to take a taxi? How much will it approximately cost?

A taxi will be $100.

Public transit will take almost 3 hours aboard 3 different conveyances.

Can you change to a different car rental company so you can drop it at LGB? (All rental companies will do this -- it shouldn't cost $400 more than dropping it at LAX). Try hotwire.com, and select 'cars'.

Or, you can transfer from LAX to LGB as follows:

1. You can rent a car from LAX and drop it at LGB (How many people are you traveling with? What day of the week?) If there are 4 of you, it will be less expensive to rent a car ($40 to $60 -- depending on the day of the week -- + gas + insurance, if need be) than to take a taxi.

2. You can take a 'shared van' from Super Shuttle: $30 for the first passenger in your group + $9 for each additional passenger.

I think if you have to stick with the car with the big drop fee, then Super Shuttle or Prime Time Shuttle would be the best option.

I'd stick with your plan and pay the $100 cab fee. You'd still be saving $300.

A shared van shuttle, ie Supershuttle or Primetime should cost about $50 for two people. Primetime advertises a private GoSedan service for up to 3 people and 3 bags at $79 including driver tip.

I'd stick with the $100 taxi ride. Don't go back to LAX,call a taxi from the car rental, which are all located near the 405 freeway. You can be on your way quicker.

I spent 40 minutes entering LAX and getting around to Delta terminal on Sunday evening picking up my son. I would not have wanted to be in a taxi all that time.

A slightly cheaper option would be to take the shared van shuttle to the Long Beach Marriott at Spring and Lakewood (they charge $16 per person) and then it's a $5 cab ride to the airport. From the hotel to the airport is only a mile if you feel like walking (but I probably wouldn't with luggage).

One of the issues with taxis is that you get to pay for wait time, which can really jack up the bill during the daytime.

What about Shuttle2LAX.com? They will take you to LGB for $20 first passenger and $11 each additional passenger.
