One day to shop!

A girlfriend and I are coming down for a conference in April. We are arriving a day early so that we can shop. We need a nice, reasonable hotel for one night (before we check into the one our company is paying for!) that is close to great shopping, probably would like a large outlet mall type of setting, and close to good restaurants. We don't really need fancy - just clean and safe and close to shopping (or close to a shuttle to get us to shopping). Okay - so that's a tall order - hotel, restaurants, shopping! We are flying into LB - do you suggest a car?

Are you staying in Long Beach for the conference? Or somewhere else? In downtown Long Beach, there is a mall with a Wal-Mart, Marshalls, and a Nordstrom Rack.

To get to the Outlet Malls you will need to rent a car.

The largest outlet mall near Long Beach is The Citadel

This is in a very industrial part of Los Angeles County and you probably don't want to spend the night in the area.

In my opinion, the two best outlet malls in the general area:

Premium Outlets in Camarillo, which is a two hour drive northward towards Santa Barbara

Or Desert Hills Premium Outlets, which is a two hour drive eastwards towards Palm Springs

You could then drive into Palm Springs to spend the night and then shop in Palm Springs area

A smaller version of these two is Carlsbad Premium Outlets, about two hours southward towards San Diego

PatriciaF, that was such a great answer. My wife and I will be in California in May and after a couple of nights in Long Beach we are heading to Palm Spring then Santa Barbara. My wife is now very happy with the shopping locations en-route.

The one outlet mall that PatriciaF missed is the Outlets at Orange near Disneyland. It is pretty close to Long Beach, has many inexpensive hotels because of proximity to Disneyland and good nightlife because of Downtown DIsney and The GardenWalk.

And while I agree with PatriciaF in general on the The Citadel, it does have a very nice hotel onsite, the Doubletree by Hilton and there is a nice Crowne Plaza at the Commerce Casino just down the road.

Scott--thanks for the info about The Outlets at Orange. We usually only meet friends there for dinner that live in El Toro. We seldom wander around and look at the shops. I think the last time I went there to shop, most of the store fronts were empty.
