ideas please, from long beach cruise 8.30am, fly out LAX 5pm

Hi, we arrive in Long Beach Cruise Terminal 8am or so on 8th March, and fly out of LAX at 5pm, so have half a day or more free. Are there any tours or points of interest from Long Beach terminal that can drop us off t LAX around 3pm?

The other option is just to get a shuttle transfer and hang around the airport all day.

Also not sure on travel time and traffic, thanks, Julie

Hi Julie - there's a couple of points of interest in Long Beach, like the Queen Mary (your cruise will probably dock close to this) and the Aquarium of the Pacific. Look up Long Beach's passport shuttle bus system, you can use this to get between the cruse port/queen mary and the Aquarium. You can also take the passport shuttle to the transit plaza in Long Beach. At the Transit Plaza, you can take the Blue Line light rail train towards the 7th St. Metro Center station in downtown LA. Exit the train at the Wilmington / Rosa Parks station and there switch to the Green Line light rail train towards Redondo Beach. Exit at the Aviation Blvd. station. There you can get a free shuttle bus to the terminals at LAX. Off the top of my head the blue line / green line / shuttle bus should take about 90 minutes to LAX, and would be far cheaper than a shuttle, with total cost of only $3 per person.

OK, two issues, while the Carnival Inspiration actually arrives very early in the morning, off-loading STARTS around 8 AM, and everyone has to go through Customs and Immigration. They split up the ship into over 20 segments, based on where your cabin is located. And then you are off-loaded based on the number you are assigned, so you might not get out of Customs until after 12 Noon.

Second issue, what would you do with your luggage while doing something in the Long Beach area. As much as I would love for you to have a chance to do something, due to both those issues, I can't recommend anything.

Alas, your best bet is to just get a shared shuttle van from the Long Beach Cruise Port to LAX directly, and have a meal and/or do some duty free shopping to kill some time.

I have done the Carnival Inspiration 4 day trip arriving on Friday about a year ago, and we did not get out of customs until around 11 AM, and there was still plenty of folks behind us. The customs processing is slow at the Long Beach Cruise Port. The goal is to have everyone out of the building by Noon, as they need to board the next group, but Customs will not allow anyone in until everyone is out and they can "clear" the building. Our start date was the Monday after the Super Bowl, and the guests on the weekend 3 day cruise was SLOW getting off, and they had to use a secondary plan (they have a processing center on the Queen Mary) and a BUNCH of lines waiting to enter the customs building until the US officials gave the all clear.

And yes, your one real option is to hire a private vehicle on a "per hour" basis and then ask for suggestions based on how much time you have, here is the link to the tourism board for the city of Long Beach. My guess, the cost would be over $100 per hour for a private Town Car or Van with a driver.

Are you willing to hire a car? If so, you can stow your luggage in the boot, use the car to tour the Long Beach area (and perhaps some other areas on the way to LAX, if you have time). Then, you can drop the car at LAX. The drive from Long Beach to LAX is pretty simple:

1. Long Beach Freeway north to the San Diego Freeway exit.

2. San Diego Freeway north to the LAX exit (Century Bl).

If you depart LAX at 5 pm, you'll need to be 'at the terminal' by 2pm which means dropping the car at 1:30 pm. If you eat somewhere near LAX, you'll need about an hour for that so you'll need to arrive in the airport area by 12:30pm. The drive from Long Beach will take about 40 minutes so you'll need to start driving at around 11:50 a.m.

When you add in the time it will take to pick up the car and the chance that you could be disembarking as late as noon, you won't have much time to do much touring.

If you take a 'shared van', you'll have even less time since the van will wait to pick up other passengers before heading to the airport and is likely to drop off others before you. Add to that, you'll be dropped at LAX which means eating at the airport (ugh!).

If you can afford a private car and driver, I'd go with that.

We did a cruise out of Long Beach a couple of years ago and when we arrived back we were one of the last groups to disembark and we were thru customs and in a Taxi by 9.30am. People started getting off about 8.15am so it was really quick. We were on the Carnival Splendour which carries more passengers than the Inspiration.

We rented a car for the day and spent a few hours at Santa Monica and rode bikes along the path to Venice Beach. We left there about 4pm and drove to Anaheim to check in to our hotel there.

You may want to consider taking a tour. Sunseeker Tours picks up at the cruise terminals and depending on your flight departure time, will drop you at LAX. Check them out at www.sunseekertours.com
