Driving from Salt Lake City to Mount Whitney-places to stay?

Any suggestions of where to stay to break up the trip from SLC to Whitney? I think I am taking Route 6 and wondered if there are motels to stay at past Ely? Also, any suggestions about hiking up the mountain would be appreciated (have a permit to camp on way up).

Tonopah would be the next place to stay. The Mizpah is a historic hotel, or the Best Western is one of the nicer places. Be sure to fill your gas tank in Ely.

You could stop in between the two at the intersection of Hwy 375, the Extra Terrestrial Hwy and get a picture of the sign.

Agree with Tonopah. We have stayed at the Best Western but have heard Mizpah is nicely restored now. And Dez is right. No pumps between Ely and Tonopah for 160 miles. Take that picture at ET highway (also a sign that says no fuel for 110 miles) and see Warm Springs at that point. A ghosttown with 3 houses. The springs house is fenced though. Us 6 between Ely and Warm Springs is a great drive.

You may see some wild horses along that stretch of highway too.

The trip from Salt Lake to Lone Pine is very beautiful and peaceful. I like the ride through that part of Nevada, but it is a logistical challenge because Ely is less than halfway along while Tonopah is almost exactly ¾ of the way, and there is literally nothing in the 170 miles between them. Not even a place with a population, let alone a motel, gas station, or soda machine. Maybe its biggest claim to fame is being the setting for Stephen King's novel "Desperation." It's a worthy rival to Hwy 50, "America’s Loneliest Road."

Tonopah is not exactly a metropolis, but it has essential services. The motel I've always liked is the Jim Butler. It is not the lap of luxury but is comfortable and affordable. It's right on the main drag (Hwy 95, but not to worry, nighttime traffic is extremely light) with a second floor deck where you can sit and watch this little town go about its business. They do a good job of providing visitor info.

Is Lone Pine and Mt. Whitney your ultimate destination, and do you have any flexibility in your travel plans?

Be sure to allow a day (or more) to enjoy Lone Pine itself. It's a fine little town. Along with Mt. Whitney and the Alabama Hills, Lone Pine also has Manzanar National Historic Site; a charming downtown with restaurants, shops with local items and outdoor recreation stuff, and more; a movie museum focusing on Hollywood’s relationship with the Eastern Sierra and Death Valley; and a good visitor center just east of town. North of downtown is a monument to a monster 1872 earthquake that scientists believe equaled the 1906 San Francisco quake; south of town is a lake created by the vertical displacement from that quake which is big and deep enough to sail small boats. And of course there is Death Valley, less than two hours east of Lone Pine. You could go there before or after Mt. Whitney and see the lowest point in North America, Badwater.

From SLC you can drive 6/us50 via Delta and Great Basin NP, or I80 west and Lincoln hw 93 to Ely. That last route will be faster. Take 6 again from Ely.to Bishop. Also a nice drive, and 395 south to Lone Pine. Along 6 just before Bishop you'll find Laws Museum and a sign that says us6 is 3208 miles long! Provincetown Ma-Bishop Ca.
