Joshua Tree National Park

I am coming to La Quinta with a few friends for a girls get-away weekend in mid-August. I realize that it is going to be very hot while we are there. We'd like to go see one of the parks and do a LITTLE hiking. Is it unrealistic to think we can hike at this time of year due to the heat? We were thinking of going early in the morning and just want to see a bit of one of the parks. Also, any suggestions on which park to visit?

You could visit Joshua Tree if you got there very early and did some short hikes like Hidden Valley Loop or maybe Wall Street Mill.

I would head to the northern end of the park, where the Joshua Trees are, and enter at the west entrance.Do some easy hikes, maybe drive to Keys View for a view of Palm Springs.

You could head back thru the town of Joshua Tree and maybe stop at Pappy and Harriets in Pioneertown for food and look around the old movie sets.

Or you could continue thru the park and exit via Cottonwood near the bottom end of the park, see the cholla cactus grove, then take I-10 back to LQ.

If you are coming on a weekend, the indian canyon are in Palm Springs and are on the summer schedule right now. Nice there with streams and palm groves.

For a short excercise trail in Palm Desert, you can go early in the AM and do the Bump and Grind trail off Painters Path Street behind Target. Nice valley views.

A good beer bar in LQ is Burgers and Beer. Happy hour 7 days a week!

Also check out Hamiltons Sports bar near the Chevy dealer. On Friday (or saturday?)nights a guitarist named Kal David usually fills the little place.

Also, from the Palm Springs Tram you can reach Mt. San Jacinto State Park. It is much, much cooler than the valley and has some nice hikes.

Yes it is very hot to hike at lower elevations. The only place to hike this time of the year is on Mt san jacinto.
