Quick weekend girls trip...need some suggestions

Hello! Will be in Southern California for 2 full days at the end of the month. We're flying in on a Thursday, flying out on Sunday (out of LAX). Thursday we're spending in LA and Sunday we're not making plans due to travel...

We are staying in Carlsbad. Have access to a car. No kids.

Some things of interest include:

La Jolla

Coronado Island

Gaslamp District

Beaches (kayaking, surfing, paddleboarding potentially?)

Torrey Pines

MAYBE Temecula????

I know we can't fit it all in. And we don't want to be running like crazy people. Would like to find a few things to "schedule" and the rest will be go with the flow...

Any suggestions, thoughts, opinions welcome...I don't have a lay of the land at all (short of looking at maps)...

Thanks in advance!

Well, I'm not a girl so probably can't comment too much on this one!

But I will say you should plan on a big night out in the Gaslamp. I've had a couple of very good nights in Onyx before and, if you like steak and a bit of fun with dinner, the Gaslamp Strip Club might be for you. (Not that kind of fun. Strip is the cut of steak!)

Torrey Pines State Reserve and La Jolla could be combined, including the kayaking or other watersport. TPSR had short trails so you can see everything in less than 2 hours if you were to go on all the trails. The La Jolla Shores neighborhood is where your kayaking/surfing/paddleboarding would take place. If you take a kayaking tour, count on another 2 hours. Afterwards you could head up to the village of La Jolla, less than a mile from LJS. Depending on what you want to do--lunch or dinner, walk along the LJ Cove, windowshop--you should count on 2-4 hours. You could also reverse the plans, by starting in the village first and have breakfast there, then go to LJS and TPSR.

Well, If you've looked at maps then you know that you are staying in a suburb that is about a 30min. drive south to the La Jolla neighborhood where you'll find LJ cove/ Torrey Pines etc.

The gaslamp is a place to go for a night out and that will be either about a 50min. drive farther south or perhaps you would take the train so you wouldn't worry about drinking and driving. The gaslamp is in our downtown and Coronado is either a 15min. ferry ride across the bay or a short drive.

Temecula is North and East of your location so cannot be combined with andy of the other activities.

2 full days is a short time to fit everything in especially when you are flying out of LAX which is a good hour (or more) north of your location.

For the things you say you want to see and do Carlsbad isn't a very good place to stay, I'm afraid. Is staying in Carlsbad your only option i.e. you're staying with friends or it's a timeshare or something like that? As Riff has said it can be a 45 min - an hour drive to get from Carlsbad (depending on 'where' in Carlsbad you are staying) to get to Downtown SD / Gaslamp. You don't so you plan on it but I would not have a big night out in the Gaslamp unless someone in your group doesn't drink. I'd go out in Carlsbad and walk or take a taxi. Riff mentioned the train which is a good alternative.

I would take Temecula off your list.

I'd combine La Jolla, beach time, kayaking & Torrey Pines on one day. And do Downtown, the Bay, have lunch in the Gaslamp or on the water at the Ferry Landing on Coronado, visit Coronado, and maybe stop by Balboa Park on the other day. You could even visit Cabrillo Nat'l Monument if it's a clear day the views are stunning.

I agree with the others, move from Carlsbad and eliminate Temecula. Doing both will save you a lot of time on the freeway.

If they were going to be longer than 2 days then maybe a visit to Temecula would be worth it. With only 2 days and all that they want to see / do in San Diego IMO a trip to Temecula doesn't makes too much sense.
