Making Memories for my 10 year old...

I am traveling to LA in a week for a medical appointment for my 10 year old son. He has a rare eye disease and sadly, is losing his sight, so I am trying to make the most of a short 2-night trip for him. I chose to spend $$ on staying at The Beach House in Hermosa Beach to let him see the sun set and rise on the ocean. Wanted him to go to sleep and wake up seeing/hearing the ocean. He loves to fish, loves the outdoors. Can someone recommend a pier fishing experience or perhaps an inexpensive boat ride for him to see some fish, seals, dolphins, whales? Or perhaps a specific place to go while we are there on the beach? We have a Thursday and Friday afternoon free. I don't want to regret making a choice that is more gimmick than actual real experience for him. Thank you.

Really sorry to hear that about your son.

You might want to look into fishing or boat opportunities in King Harbor (just south of Hermosa in Redondo Beach) or in Marina Del Rey (a bit north of Hermosa). Otherwise, you can bring your own fishing gear and fish off the end of the Hermosa Beach Pier (or the Redondo Beach Pier) - lots of people do this.

You can also look into whale watching excursion opportunities from these two harbors.

Another thought would be to drive him around the Palos Verdes peninsula - parts of this drive are very scenic - http://wikitravel.org/en/Palos_Verdes

Wow, so sorry to hear about your son's illness.

The closest option to Hermosa is: http://www.voyagerexcursions.com/ While they can't guarantee whales, my son went two weeks ago and saw three. In any case, you'll see 1000s of dolphins and it is spectacular. Traffic in LA can be rough. So making a 1:30 departure could be tricky depending on where your appointment is.

You can rent bikes at the Hermosa Cyclery a block from the Beach House and ride along the Strand. Go north and check out the small aquarium at the end of the Manhattan Beach pier.

Also about a block from your hotel is Hennessy's, for great rooftop burgers with a view.

So sorry to hear about your son, and wonderful you want to take him to the ocean. I think the Beach House is absolutely the best place to stay, I recommend it all the time. Leave the sliders open (if you are on 2nd or 3rd floor) to listen to the waves during the night.

As for fishing, since your son is only 10, he will not need a license to fish off the piers. Age limit is 16.

You can rent fishing poles in Redondo Beach at Redondo Sportfishing.

Here is a live web cam for the Strand (boardwalk) at the Hermosa Beach Pier, a block from the Beach House, looking toward Manhattan Beach. You can see people out walking or riding bikes. It's two miles between the piers, and makes an easy excursion.

One of our favorite places to have breakfast or lunch is on the patio of Good Stuff's restaurant, right next to the BH. Sit outside and watch the people go by.

Great ideas! I booked the whale excursion on line and will print out this response and plan on renting fishing equipment for him too!

Thanks to all for taking the time to respond.....it has helped me to make some plans for him with confidence I am making the most of the trip to LA.

Kind Regards,

Susan

So sorry to hear about your Son but can tell that he is a very lucky guy to have a special Mom as you.

Another potential idea is a surfing lesson. Hermosa Beach Chevron Surfing has lessons for all ages. Now this is usually during the summer but in looking at their website, they work with special needs kids, so it might be worth a call or an email to see if they can make special arrangements for a lesson with your son while you are here.

Here is their website with all their contact information:
