Hermosa, manhantan or st monica

Hi,

We are a family with 3 teenage boys and planning on going to Los Angeles mid August for about 10 days. Being a family we would like a condo/apartement that is quite close to the beach. Any suggestions and which beach is most recommended. Also, what is the difference between north and South Hermosa?

Thanks,

Maria

Santa Monica is the most central beach in terms of proximity to most of the tourist attractions in the central LA area, so if you are planning to spend a significant amount of time sightseeing, it may be a better location for you - Hermosa and Manhattan are a bit further from these things.

That said, Santa Monica has more of a "big city meets the beach" feel to it, whereas Hermosa and Manhattan have a little bit more of a quiet, small beach town atmosphere. If I was just coming to spend most of my time by the beach, I'd go with one of these instead. Both are quite nice and there isn't a huge difference between the two, IMHO.

Even if you do not stay there, the Manhattan Beach Open beach volleyball tournament is around mid-August usually, this is a very big tournament that is famous and has been going on for years. You and your family might enjoy this.

It all comes down to how often you will be seeing sights in LA. Hermosa can be a pain, it adds about 30 minutes to your trip. Santa Monica has everything, is larger, but less rental options for a family (it's very pricy) near the beach.

Unfortunately the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) that used to put on the tournaments in Manhattan and Hermosa Beaches folded last year right before those tournaments. If there are any tournaments this year, its likely to be smaller scale or informal.

A tournament went on in any case that weekend without the big prize money, but with the City of Manhattan Beach stepping up to honor the tournaments 50th year.

This coming August the USA Volleyball tournament will be held in MB, it was approved last month by the city.

I agree with yoga, if you plan to be site seeing a lot during your 10 days, Hermosa Beach adds extra driving time in summer months to see Hollywood and LA.

If your plans include several days spent at Disney and Knott's Parks in Orange County, consider staying in Huntington Beach. Very popular with teens. Definitely further for LA attractions though-- so it depends where you are planning to spend the most time.

Otherwise, Santa Monica or Manhattan/Hermosa Beach.
