The Garlic Festival is at the end of July. Have you ever been to the Monterey Peninsula--Monterey, Carmel and Pacific Grove are the main towns. You can drive to Carmel is about 45 minutes (take 101 S to 156 West (not East!--you come to 156 East about five miles before 156 West). Follow the signs to the Monterey Peninsula. 156 deposits you right onto Hwy 1 South. It's about 15 -20 miles further. Take the exit for Ocean Ave. Carmel-by-the-Sea. You will have tons of upscale shopping and dining to choose from, as well as a beautiful white-sand beach. Here is a guide to Carmel: http://www.carmelcalifornia.org/

Have a look at weather.com for avg temperatures in Gilroy and then at the spots that PGdenizen talks about -- just for the weather I would stay away from Gilroy, not to mention the amazing activities and scenery and food in the Monterey Peninsula. You can then go fruit picking somewhere just along Hwy 1 in the Castroville area north of Monterey depending on what is in season.

So I peeked at your profile, other questions you asked (or answered) and what places...... London...... Paris....... Rome..... Florence...... Zurich.....

So how does GILROY get on your radar?????? :)

What appeals about Gilroy? They do have the cool outlet mall, but after that it gets pretty thin for things for tourists to do other than Gliroy Gardens, but I am not sure ladies on a get-away want to do a family theme park.

LOL!!! My girlfriend owns a huge ranch with a quarry there. We are doing a "retreat" from our dear husbands! So trying to figure out what would be fun things around the area. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you bring to the table!

Monterey is a great suggestion. The weather will definitely be cooler. If you're looking for something to do closer to Gilroy, I would suggest hitting some of the wineries in the area. Here is a link for more info if that's something that interests you...

I live in Morgan Hill, which is only about 10 minutes north of Gilroy. We have a quaint downtown with some good restaurants.

Enjoy your visit!

I think there is enough to do in Gilroy and environs to keep you amused. If you like a good steak, look at The Milias Restaurant.

KauaiHonu, I once got in a bar fight in the Silver Saddle Saloon in Morgan Hill way back in my wild days when Morgan Hill was a country town :)

Well, what comes to mind about Gilroy and ladies is shopping as there is an excellent premium outlet there

www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp…

And if you like beautiful parks - and are ok if they are kid friendly too, spending an hour or two at Gilroy Gardends is fun to do

http://www.gilroygardens.org/

If you like looking for hidden treasures in antique shops, then head just south of Gilroy to San Juan Bautista - there is also a California Mission there. We like the Mexican restaurant with their beautiful cactus and desert flowers called Jardines de San Juan

http://www.jardinesrestaurant.com/

Drive out highway 152 to Casa de Fruita - get some nuts, wine, vegetables...short drive from Gilroy

http://www.casadefruta.com/

but to do your own fruit picking recommend driving to Watsonville and going to Gizdich Ranch - its our favorite in the area

http://www.gizdich-ranch.com/index.php

For parks in the area of Gilroy (if you are into doing some hiking but the ranch probably gives you enough of that ) there is nearby state park called Coe State Park

stateparks.com/henry_willard_coe_state_park_…

It is a nice place to do some hikes....

As mentioned, Morgan Hill has a nice downtown and good restaurants; also movie theaters. There is also a nice city park there and more.....

Also, there is wineries nearby - and also stop at Garlic World
