mobile phone

Hi

What is the best option for using mobile phone in Ca.

we are arriving shortly from Australia for 2 weeks and are in need of mobile phone

Any suggestions appreciated like - Rental/ purchasing or maybe getting Global roaming on my own handset.

Have been told that not all phones are compatible with your system.

I have Tri-band on mine.

Best Regards

If you have a world phone, frequency 850mhz and 1900 mhz. ... validate that your phone is GSM and either of those frequencies. Look on the Cingular website ....you can buy a prepaid sim card from Cingular Wireless. Other carriers offer similar services but Cingular is currently the least expensive, or your Auz carrier might offer roaming in the USA but check on prices per min.

Many companies rent phones - all car rental agencies offer a phone to rent, too.

I don't think you are staying in Garden Grove (where you posted this), if you tell us where you'll be staying, we can direct you to shops to rent a phone.

There are several prepaid phones that are available in the U.S. They have various advantages and disadvantages. Probably any of them would work in Garden Grove. Some may have better coverage than others in more rural areas. You would not be able to use the pre-paid phone outside the U.S. A. but you could probably make and receive international calls.

Possibly a good choice is Virginmobile USA. This has the lowest initial investment, with a phone costing as little as $20. The smallest calling card is $20, and connection time is 18 cents/minute. With Virginmobile cost per minute and expiration (90 days) are the same for all cards. With some pre-paid phones cost per minute can be lower if you buy a bigger card (e.g 1000 minutes for $100 from T-mobile, 1 year expiration), but higher if you buy a smaller card (e.g. 30 minutes for $10 from T-mobile, 30 day expiration). Also Virginmobile has lower international long distance rates than most, although you could buy a long distance card from any quickie-market to work with any phone. Is there a catch? Well Virginmobile has no roaming, so there are probably more rural and semi-rural areas that will have no coverage. Tracfone is probably the champ for coverage in prepaid, but minutes are more expensive.

Most big box stores carry these. In Garden Grove there is a Target store on Harbor Blvd across the street from the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
