Fresno in March 2013

I'm coming to Fresno in March 2013 for a conference. What is there to do in Fresno in terms of 'history'? ie. old buildings, museums, exhibitions, art galleries etc?

Hmmm - Fresno isn't really known for cultural stuff. I am sure there are things to do and someone will pop in with some ideas, but my first thought when I read that you were going to Fresno for a conference was "I'm sorry." ;)

thanks November Moon for your expert knowledge of Fresno!

While we don't have the traditional urban "stuff", there are choices and March is a beautiful month to visit. I will list galleries etc, but in addition, the blossom trail will most likely be at peak if you like nature. gofresnocounty.com/blossomtrail/blossomindex… will keep you updated on weather and trails.

There is also Art Hop on Thursdays that is fun. http://www.fresnoarthop.org/

This is a good list to start with and March is a long way away, so post closer and get an updated list of events while you visit. March can be a busy month for events as the weather is usually perfect.

Muffya started a good list, let me add to it.

A few annual events in March in this area:

Shinzen Japanese Garden Spring Blossom Festival - The Shinzen Japanese Garden is a real jewel. The Spring Festival is held in mid-March. Pictures of the garden and info at:

Rogue Festival - Possibly the largest alternative/fringe performing arts festival on the west coast. The two week Rogue Festival features acts from around the world performing non-mainstream theater, music, dance, etc. Shows are usually interesting and entertaining. Info and the program descriptions of the 2012 shows as an example for next year:

Wine trails - There are three different wine trails in the area. In March, there are usually events on the trails or individual winery events connected to the Blossom Trail. But even if there are no events when visiting, a weekend on one of the trails can be a relaxing drive. Wine quality varies but I enjoy some like the Tempranillo at Cedar View Winery or the Ports at Ficklin or the Ports/Dessert Wines at Quady.

For performing arts keep checking at:

Roger Rockas - Small dinner theater that has served as the career starting point for performers like Audra McDonald from Broadway stage (just won her 5th Tony Award) along with Chris Colfer from "Glee". Louise Mandrell is starring in Calamity Jane this summer. Check in a few months for the 2013 shows at:

Also some good performances can be found at:

Well known musical performers covering all genres usually book shows at (although it is still early for much in March 2013 to be scheduled):

Classical music and opera:

To continue, in terms of old buildings, etc. Here are some walking tour guides to help you. The buildings cover styles from mid-Century modern to art deco to Renaissance Revival and more.

There is also a nice collection of outdoor art in downtown Fresno that most miss. It includes pieces by Calder and Renoir.

A large collection of murals are highlighted in walking tour in the Mural District, a revitalizing area that includes shops, studios, and lofts.

Of course, I cannot forget to mention the Forestiere Undergound Gardens. Dug by hand this unique residence covers several acres with rooms, plants, etc.

If you prefer to hire a tour guide, check with these companies:

Here's a better link to the underground gardens:

I don't mean to send you away, but if you have time and if you're not from the surrounding area why not take the trip out to Yosemite for the day? It only is about a 3 hour drive North and it's definitely worth it!
