Abi,

I've found the California state parks: www.parks.ca.gov/parkindex/region_info.asp…

and national forests:

http://www.fs.fed.us/ really useful for planning our RV trip. Although not having arrived yet, can't make any specific recommendations!

Also this site: www.rvparkreviews.com/regions/California/ has a lot of helpful reviews.

Hi abi, check your other thread (Lake Tahoe) for a list of RV websites to help you plan.

Forest Service campgrounds are quite "rustic". They most likely have dirt pads, no hookups, and no additional amenities. They will be located off amongst the trees, and are closer to "nature". If they are busy, they tend to be somewhat noisy as tent campers cook and spend their time outside. You should book ahead.

State Parks often are also basic (although usually paved) and have no hookups, although a few have limited hookups. They are nearly all VERY busy in the summer, and you must book as *far* ahead as possible.

The Benbow Inn RV Resort is at the complete opposite end of the scale! RV resorts always have full hookups and cable TV, usually wi-fi, often recreation facilities such as a swimming pool and rec room, nice launderettes and so on. Sites will be paved or concrete, usually with lawns in-between campsites. The Benbow is a lovely RV resort.

Another suggestion would be this nice one, located about 40 miles north of Garberville near Fortuna:

There is a State park at Richardson Grove - very very busy in summer and no hookups. There is also a private RV park there:
