Restaurants in Escondido (or surrounding area)

Can any of the locals recommend any of the following restaurants?

Sushi Yama

Sopranos Pizza

Rock 'n Jenny's Italian Subs

Winz Italian Bistro, Pizza and Deli

Old Mining Company - San Marcos

Mariscos Las Palmas - Vistas

Arashi Sushi Bar - Vista

I have vouchers from restaurant.com that can be used for any of these. If you think any are worth it, we'll definitely check them out when we visit at the end of the month.

Thanks!

Hi JRBS!

I've been to Sushi Yama, but it has been some time. I thought the sushi was good and it was fresh. While I'd go back, it wasn't the best sushi have ever had or anything like that. Just reasonably priced average sushi in a nice environment.

I like Vinz Wine Bar, but I've only eaten food there once and it was with a restaurant.com certificate! That time we both had lasagna which was quite good and the service was really nice during that experience. Keep in mind it is a small venue, so can get busy on the weekends. I've eaten plenty of sandwiches from their deli next door and they've always been tasty.

Rock N Jenny's is very affordable and tasty. It's not somewhere I GO to eat, because it's just kind of a weird dining area, but I get take out from there and have had hot subs, cold subs and their spaghetti and meatballs. All have been good. The only reason I don't go there more often for take out is because they close at 7pm during the week and I'm not home by then.

I haven't tried any of the others, but we do have a LOT of great restaurants in Escondido if you need any further recommendations.

Thanks for the feedback Lady Jade! I'd love recommendations for any other places in Escondido. We're staying at the Welk Resort so we'll probably dine in a lot but there will be some meals where we really don't want to cook for nine people!

And please, if there are any off-the-beaten-path, local joints worth checking out, let me know. We'll try anything once! :)

Thanks again,

Jen

For breakfast, we have a few local places that aren't bad. We've got the Westside Cafe on 9th that serves up some pretty good maple thyme bacon. There is also the Champions Family Restaurant on Grand Avenue, it's a local greasy spoon, but good food, cheap prices and friendly service. If you like omelettes, you should definitley hit the Golden egg Omelette House on Mission, they have every omelette you can think of! Good food, but can get crowded on weekends. Oh and Cocina del Charro on Valley Pkwy has an awesome Sunday brunch for about $16pp. I only eat there for the brunch as I have been dissatisfied with other meals there.

For lunch or dinner, besides your normal chain restaurants, Escondido has some casual places & finer dining. For Subs, I'm a fan of the Hungry Bear Sub Shop on El Norte Pkwy - pretty close to where you'll be staying. For Mexican food we have a zillion and one places. I discovered this place called Rancho Las Palmas on the corner of Washington and Center City Pkwy that has really authentic Mexican food for great prices. It looks a little off-putting as its in an old coffee shop, but the food was dynamite and I loved the shrimp cocktail - that was a full meal! I also like a place on Grand called La Tapatia, that has been around forever - also has an authentic feel and good food at decent prices. Some people disagree with me, but we love it. For a more upscale Mexican experience I highly recommend Hacienda de Vega; it's pricey, but the food is good and the garden setting is really pretty at night. It's on the south end of town right off Center City Pkwy.

For fine dining, I'm in love with Vintana. It's hard to miss as it's on the top floor of the Lexus dealer right off the freeway on the 9th street exit. It can be pricey depending on what you order, but the chef is my favorite and the food is delicious. If you go during happy hour from 2-6 every day, they have $7 apps at the bar and those are some darn good apps. Stone Brewery is also in town up on Citracado by the new hospital and they have not just an extensive beer offering, but good local slow food. I haven't eaten there since they revamped their menu, but in the past I was always highly satisfied by the food there... also, a little on the pricey side. ON Grand there are several nice restaurants, I personally like Tango and as far as I know they still do a Wednesday night half off menu in bar, but they also have a very nice menu served in the dining room. For a little more casual, right next door is Joe's Italian dinners, which is a small homey little Italian place and on W Valley Pkwy, we have a BBQ restaurant called Mike's BBQ that is pretty tasty; they do a great steak and they have a sports bar attached.

There are tons more restaurants in San Marcos, just down the road - I could write a book on all the places to eat!

I can't help but throw out there, that you should definitely try to hit Baltimore Snowball for a tasty treat, I even eat them when it's freezing outside. It's a tiny walk up (or drive up) on El Norte parkway that serves ice cream covered in flavored snow and toppings... sounds weird, but it's divine!

Hope that helps! Enjoy your visit and our town!

The Westside on ninth, west of Center City Parkway, has the best breakfast you will find. We had come in from the east coast and pulled in for a bite. Never had a better breakfast experience. Good menu selections without having way to many choices. Delicious, fresh food, served hot, and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. My wife managed a 200 seat white tablecloth restaurant for 20 years. We can't go in any eatery without a critical eye. The three breakfasts we had there were outstanding and reasonably priced. No disappointments.

Rock 'n Jenny's Italian Subs is great, the only other spot I've been is the Old Mining Co and it is okay, not great, but if I was in the area I'd go back. It is like an Outback Steakhouse with personality.

If you are at the Welk Resort, head to Pala Casino. They have several good restaurants including the steak house (Oak Room) and the buffet is pretty good as well.
