Let me give you some background. We are a group of 3 women flying into San Jose airport on Sunday 4/8. We are renting a car and staying in a free condo in Cupertino until Saturday 4/14.

We are planning on going to Alcatraz Monday and maybe spend another day in SF. Any advice on how we should get to SF(drive/park? or mass transit) Anything we should not miss neighborhoods places to eat? We are all great cooks and love to eat, particularly seafood. I am a vegetarian but do eat seafood.

We were planning on spending at least 2 days in "wine country" but looking at the map makes me wonder if it is reasonable to drive back and forth. Could we take different scenic routes? I'm thinking maybe we should get a hotel there for at least 1 night maybe 2 because I'd rather spend my time tasting wine then worrying about who is going to be the designated driver. If so, what town? Should we visit Napa or Sonoma? Both? Others? Do you have any favorite vineyards? Sights we shouldn't miss? I heard something about mud baths.

We were also thinking about spending a day to the south, maybe Monterray, so we could have a day by the ocean.

Any suggestions you can give us would be appreciated.

If you drive into the city, parking can be a hassle, to say the least. You can take the interstate 280 to Daly City and take the BART from there. OR You can park in various pay lots by Fisherman's Wharf. If you take BART, you could get off at the embarcadero and take a cab over to Fisherman's wharf, or get off at Powell and take the cable car. Food in the city is fabulous. One of my fav things to do is just get bread bowl clam chowder near fisherman's wharf from one of the street counter places. There are vegetarian restaruants too that are in the city. Pacific Cafe is great for Seafood.

As far as going to Napa for wine tasting, I would go to the Santa CRuz mountain wineries instead if you are staying in Cuppertino. Some of my Favorites are Thomas Fogerty and J Lohr. Check out their websites and check out www.scmwa.com (santa cruz mountain wine assoc)

If you insist on going to Napa or Sonoma, and the mud baths, you probably will want to stay in Callistoga at the Comfort inn, it's very near the mud baths. Driving from Cupertino to Napa/Sonoma is do-able just not while drinking! There are many fabulous wineries all over in both Napa and Sonoma. The Domaine Chandon tour is great. Napa and Sonoma wineries all charge for tasting, as do alot of the Santa Cruz wineries. Santa Cruz and the Monterey bay aquarium, Cannry row, Carmel, are must sees in my opinion..And the traffic is not as bad out that way compared to getting to Napa..just an opinion!

Thanks for the info about the Santa Cruz winery area. I had no idea they were even there.
