Room with a view

We are celebrating a special birthday/special anniversary and definitely want a room with an ocean view. Preferably with a private patio or balcony. This will be our splurge! We are spending a few nights in Sonoma and a few new nights in the Carmel area. Any recommendations? We will be in California the end of October

My dream is to throw open the doors and have a wonderful view of the ocean....

Sounds like you would love either The Highland's Inn or The Tickle Pink Inn in the Carmel Highland's area. Both places have beautiful views and balconies. TPI is a smaller venue with very personal service and amenities such as a terraced hot tub, wonderful breakfast buffet, wine and cheese reception and fresh baked cookies upon arrival.

Enjoy your time in Carmel! www.carmelcalifornia.com :)

Agree with the above. Either of those places, a more modern Highlands Inn or the Tickle Pink inn would be wonderful.

Both these places are next door to each other and are a short drive South of the main city of Carmel. You can drive back and forth if you like. You are also a very short drive from point lobos, one of the most amazing parks to walk and hike in California.

The last option for an ocean view are the Pebble beach resorts. Just another option.

In nearby Monterey is The Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa which also has gorgeous views as does The Clement Intercontinental in Cannery Row. :)

Have a look at the:

Martine Inn

Seven Gables Inn

Green Gables Inn

These are lovely B&B's in Pacific Grove.

Thanks so much for the info....

So hard to decide which town to stay in! Not a bad problem to have :)

All excellent suggestions above. I'll add one more, Mission Ranch in Carmel. It overlooks a sheep pasture with Carmel River Beach and Point Lobos in the background. (Be careful not to confuse it with the similarly named Mission Inn) http://www.missionranchcarmel.com/

The various neighborhoods are very different though, as are the properties mentioned. This page on my website will help you narrow things down by describing the various neighborhoods and types of lodgings there. www.montereypeninsula.info/guide/lodging.html

FWIW, Tickle Pink and the Highlands Inn definitely have the most dramatic views, but they're also the most isolated. Mission Ranch views are almost as nice, and it's close to town.

Another thought is the La Playa, right in the heart of downtown Carmel. This property has recently been remodeled and the rooms are very nice. A champagne breakfast buffet is now included with your room and there is a nice heated pool there. :)

I'm going to throw in something completely different... Post Ranch Inn, in Big Sur, south of Carmel by about an hour. If you want relaxed luxury, in a serene setting, with an ocean view, hot tub on your own private balcony, this can't be beat. It is gawd-awful expensive, though, but it is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime splurge... www.postranchinn.com . Be sure to check out their video of 24 hours of their view - http://www.postranchinn.com/videos/#

Post Ranch is indeed spectacular but it is BIG $$$.

The Ventana Inn (in the same "neighbourhood") is gorgeous too and is more "affordable."

But both of these properties tend to make for an isolated vacation.
