Tickle Pink Is booked except for the suites, which are $590. Hyatt also in the upper $500 region. I was hoping for something less expensive (btwn 2 and 300)

I don't think that Carmel has many ocean front hotels. But if you are willing to go outside of Carmel, in Monterey you have the Spindrift, Monterey Plaza, and Intercontinental. Just outside of Monterey is the Best Western Beach Resort. In Pacific Grove there are some B&Bs just across the street from the ocean.

Not quite ocean front, but very close in Monterey is the Portola Hotel.

BTW- Carmel is actually 3 hours from SF. Look in Santa Cruz if you can only be 2 hours away from the city.

There are no ocean front lodgings in Carmel. There is the Tickle Pink Inn and the Highlands Inn in the Carmel Highlands area 4 miles south of Carmel by the Sea that offer dramatic coastal views, but from an elevated position on the east side of Highway 1. There are ocean front options in neighboring Monterey: Monterey Plaza Hotel, Monterey Bay Inn, Spindrift Inn, Intercontinental Clement.

Ocean front option in neighboring Pacific Grove: Borg's Oceanfront Motel (Basic and cheap, but clean with awesome views of Monterey Bay from street front rooms)

When you are visiting will also affect room rates. if your travel occurs during a special event in the area (Such as the car show in Pebble Beach this month), expect to pay higher lodging rates.

Cambria lodging may require a 2 night stay over the weekend, so you might have trouble finding lodging for a Saturday night. Look at Moonstone Landing, Sand Pebbles Inn, Little Sur Inn, Blue Dolphin Inn, Best Western Fireside Inn, White Water Inn, Castle Inn by the Sea.

As Kibblesmom suggested. Santa Cruz is a great oceanfront city 45 mins from Carmel and a happening one at that and 2 hours from SF (less on most times on the weekend)

here is a hotel there which I hear is good.

The Monterey Plaza is a beautiful ocean view property with a great spa, also. Carmel is just a few minutes away. :).

When you see Carmel's shoreline, you'll be glad that it doesn't have any hotels on it.

One Carmel resort property that is somewhat inland has very nice views of Carmel River Beach and Point Lobos with a sheep pasture in the foreground. It's called Mission Ranch. It's located at the southern boundary of Carmel just behind the Carmel Mission, so it's not as isolated as the Tickle Pink. They have a wide variety of accommodations to suit different needs and budgets. It's on my short list of places I'd stay if I didn't live here. http://www.missionranchcarmel.com/

A correction to a post above. The Monterey Peninsula is 2 to 2.5 hours from downtown San Francisco depending on traffic and the route you select. It's never taken us 3 hours unless we stop a lot.

StephenNYC:

As pointed out, Carmel is more than 2 hours from San Francisco. Getting Oceanview/Oceanfront hotels within a 2 hour distance from San Francisco - the choices are quite limited. From what we gathered over the years...

Capitola: Capitola Venetian Hotel

Santa Cruz: Sea and Sand Inn, Santa Cruz Dream Inn. Therea are a few motels near the Santa Cruz Boardwalk that may have oceanviews (at least from some rooms)

Half Moon Bay: Cypress Inn on Miramar Beach

Oceano Hotel and Spa

Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay - this may be outside of your price range

And Rockaway Beach (which makes it very close to San Francisco):

Sea Breeze Motel

Best Western Plus Lighthouse
