Hotel Abrego or Carmel Mission Inn?

We have a night booked at the Abrego In Monterey, but can cancel, . What do people think of the Carmel Mission Inn? Location wise, which is a nicer area, a nicer hotel? Any opinions or comments are appreciated.

It's difficult to compare neighborhoods, because they're very different. But they do have one thing in common, they're both next to major roads and very busy intersections.

Hotel Abrego is at the south edge of downtown Monterey. It has easy foot access (once you cross the busy intersection) to downtown, historic sites, and a little farther away, the waterfront. The immediate neighbors are a Mercedes dealership, another motel, two gas stations, and a Denney's. It is a relatively new hotel, actually an older motel that underwent a major reconstruction a couple years ago.

Carmel Mission Inn is a 1968 concrete structure located at the mouth of Carmel Valley. It is right next to Highway 1. The surrounding hills are very beautiful, but the view is marred somewhat by the surrounding shopping centers, including the famous Barnyard. The closest neighbors are a fire station and a gas station. There's not much you can walk to, except the shopping centers - which do have a number of nice restaurants. Carmel Mission is about half a mile or so up Rio Road. Downtown Carmel mile or so in the same direction. Point Lobos is a little over two miles down the highway. The area is quieter at night than Monterey.

Are you set on Carmel Mission Inn? The Normandy Inn in Carmel is in a much better location. :)

Thank you syrahgirl. The Normancy Inn looks really cute. Does it mater what room you get?

And also Thank you Mr. Toy. You gave us quite a good description of both hotel locations. I have totally ruled out the Mission Inn.

We stayed mid-week last Fall in an upstairs room with a view of the pool. We loved our room, very nicely appointed and comfortable beds. :)

Thanks for your advice , we just switched to the Normandy Inn, and booked a upper room with a fireplace. Hopefully we will not need the fireplace in Aug. Very excited.

A fireplace room sounds really nice, ours did not have one. Evenings can get chilly at the coast, you may end up using it. I hope you enoy your stay at The Normandy and Carmel! :)
