Hot springs and mud baths at Rincon de la Vieja

Hi everyone. So this may be a stupid question, but I'll be heading out to Costa Rica next week and will be spending a few days at Rincon de la Vieja. I heard that the trail to hike up to the crater of the volcano is closed, so we will be doing the Sendero Las Pailas, Cataratas Escondidas, and Catarata La Cangreja hikes instead. Along the way we will encounter hot springs and mud baths (we are actually really looking forward to encountering both these things)... so my question is 1) is it safe to get in any/all of the hot springs or mud baths we see? 2) how will we know if the water is too hot without actually putting a finger in and risk burning ourselves?

Any advice/information anyone can provide would be great. Thanks!

The mud bath that you will encounter at las pailas trails are boiling water and mud and is close to public. Now on the same trail of las pailas you will find a sign before the tree bridge that says to Santa maria area 6km that is the place to go to hotsprings which are next to the hotsprings of Rincon de la vieja lodge BTW nicee trail at this lodge to go the their hotsprings you can go walking 8km round trip or by horses.

now on the road to Rincon de la vieja volcano there is a place that has mud baths or spa with mud is call simbiosis.

The best advice try to contact Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin and ask them any question...since the volcano is kind of active...some daily changes...is better to update information!

You are right about the trail to the top, it is closed temporarily. Please do not try to enter to the springs in the park, not only it is outlawed, it is very dangerous. Look for options in the area after your hike.
