Bakersfied Basque Festival 2013

I will be in Bakersfield over Memorial Day weekend to go whitewater rafting with my family. I notice that the Basque Festival takes place on the Sat./Sun of that weekend. Has anyone attended this in the past?

None of the websites I"ve been able to find list a location of the festival, so was wondering if this was just something for the local Basque Club members, rather than the public at large.

Thanks for any info,

MizNina

Here's a link to the Bakersfield Basque Club's phone number and address. Give them a call and see if you would be welcome to attend their festivities.

Thanks for the link.

Here's a bit of a trip report: It appears that the Basque Festival is held every year at their clubhouse, which is located at: 2301 S. Union Avenue.

This year, on Sunday, the schedule was something like this:

12-230 pm. Roasted lamb luncheon ($20/pp, lamb roasted on site)

2:30-4:30 - Basque Dancing

5 pm - Handball tournament, featuring Basque players from Europe

7 pm - Dance.

It seems as if the schedule is roughly the same every year. There were many people in the crowd who were of Basque descent, and many older attendants were speaking Basque: it sounds nothing like either French or Spanish, so that was very interesting.

I believe the Bakersfield Basque are Portuguese. Hope you enjoyed some good Pyrenees sourdough. :-)
