Winter Christmas holiday

We are from South Africa & want to plan a trip to experience a white Christmas and try skiing etc. our dates are 21/12/13 - 28/12/13 but we could go a week or two later if there is more chance of snow (but then we would miss the Christmas experience). How early do you get snow in seefeld? Would this be a good destination? Which airport should we fly into? We have also been advised to look at livigno ? Any suggestions/comments?

1. Re: Winter Christmas holiday

Much may depend where you plan to be before and after this proposed stay.

Seefeld is better located.

Gateway airports -

Munich - large international airport with easy access by train and shuttles.

Innsbruck airport is the closest but a regional center for air operations.

Usually OK snow by the begining of December

Livigno not as accessable.

Seefeld sits on a high plateau above Innsbruck- 30 minutes by train.

Easy train connection to Germany ( Garmisch and Mittenwald ) for sightseeing.

Nice Christmas markets too - in Seefeld a very nice atmosphere as the market is in town square with chuch close by nice kiosks for gifts etc., Innsbruck and germany.

Sefeld with fine scenery and other winter activities - usually ok snow.

Ice skating, sleigh rides, cross country sking , winter walks.

Livigno a little higher in altitude I think.

Thank you so much for your answer. We are only coming to Europe for that week to 10 days with the aim of experiencing snow and skiing.

We are a South African family, who went to Seefeld 2 and years ago, in early Jan for our first ski trip and are going back again this year for the white Christmas/New Year experience.

We had a really great time on our last trip, stayed in a self catering apartment which is not too expensive. Last time we flew in and out of Munich and transferred by mini bus, but this time we will go via Innsbruck.

You may also want to look in to flying in to Zurich as you can get to Innsbruck relatively easily with just one change on the train at Zurich main station (Hauptbahnhof) and then change for Seefeld. Offers plenty of long haul flights and sometimes cheaper than Munich flights (or was for my friends parents coming from NZ).

6. Re: Winter Christmas holiday

I cannot add much to what has been said but we have stayed in seefeld many times in summer and winter,

winter is the most beautiful time , the village is lovley with all the pretty houses covered in snow, you should be pretty snow sure for christmas everything will be open , it is a main tourist time and even if there is not enough snow they have snow making machines to top it up. as for which airport to fly into please consider innsbruck the discent is fantastic through the mountains into what must be one of the worlds best views from a airport, it is then only about 15/20 mins up to seefeld, always plenty of taxis just outside.I hope you enjoy your holidays and will love the place as much as we do.if you have any other questions just ask.

We have been returning to Seefeld for Christmas for over 15 years now, and we never tire of it. There is always plenty to do with hiking, skiing, dining, etc. There are plenty of places for day trips so it makes a great base. We usually do Christmas Eve at the Hotel Post where they have a traditional celebration and dinner.

8. Re: Winter Christmas holiday

Seefeld has a pretty good snow record as it is a fairly high resort 1200m asl (for Austria). However just be aware that there is no guarantee there will be snow in the village at Xmas though this is unlikely.

Yes Livigno is higher up and does have a good snow record but takes a long time to get to and the village is not as nice as Seefeld

One thing to be aware of with Innsbruck airport is that it is prone to closure during the winter months if the weather is bad (snow or fog). You could find yourself redirected to Salzburg or Munich. This has happened several times in the past few winters

Hope you enjoy your holiday in Seefeld, it's a magical place in winter, not just Christmas. I think you're wise to visit after the Christmas period as it gets very busy at that time of year.
