Trekking from Buhoma to Nkuringo and onto Kisoro

I have just recently completed a walking tour from Buhoma to Kisoro through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and felt I needed to share this experince as it proved to be the highlight of my stay in Uganda.

I started my tour in Buhoma mainly because of the ease of getting there by public transport as there is a daily bus from Kampala. The first day with my guide Asgario from Nkuringo Walking Safaris we walked 5 hours through the forest some 10 km from the park HQ to Nkuringo where I stayed at the Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite at some 2086m in altitude. The campsite and adjacent bunkhouse provides accommodation for primarily budget travellers trekking between Buhoma and Kisoro and Kisoro and Buhoma. Yes the trail can be walked in either direction but I found it personally more rewarding to be walking towards the mighty volcanoes of the Virunga with the majestic Lake Mutanda in the foreground.

The campsite has a 14 km unbroken view of gallery rain forest in one direction and in the reverse the outline of all the volcanoes of the Virunga range were clearly visible. As incredible as it sounds even the peaks, snow and glacier of the DR Congo side of the Rwenzori were also visible some 160km distant from the plateau on the top of the campsite. These were exceptional conditions my guide pointed out attributed to it being the rain season when the visibility is always much better than in the dry season.

I spent the night in the bunkhouse at a cost of US$12 for the single occupancy of a twin bedded room. It was very simple yet clean and more than welcome as it rained for most of the night. Sipi the cook prepared a fantastic supper and breakfast all from fresh local produce that was an achievement considering the remoteness of our location.

The following days walk to Kisoro was virtually downhill all day. We set off early with a 19km hike to the shore of Lake Mutanda which took 4 hours with stops en-route to photograph the volcanoes and villages. I then embarked on a 2 hour dugout canoe trip to the southern end of Mutanda before reaching Kisoro. The final walk into Kisoro involves an assent of a volcanic outcrop that offers great views over the town, the Virunga and the most amazing panorama of Lake Mutanda back towards Nkuringo.

I can certainly recommend this experience to those on a tight budget and unable to trek Gorilla's but regardless keen to visit Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

There is little knowledge of this activity locally as it is very much still embryonic in it's development however certainly has great potential for the future be become a must do walking itinerary.

More details on this trip can be found at www.nkuringowalkingsafaris.com where I found a link to it from The Uganda Travel Planner www.traveluganda.co.ug.

Useful detail in your writing.

How safe did you feel walking so close to the DRC border?

The proximity of the DRC border did not play on my mind at all when deciding to undertake this walk. Actually when at Buhoma the location of the National Parks HQ and where most tourists to the park visit this venue is probably only some 500m from the border visible on the forested ridge above the trading centre.

The Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite in a strait line is about 5 km from the border directly west. A road proceeds right up to the DRC border for some 12 km from Nkuringo where there is reportedly a large military detachment.

To undertake this walk the National Parks provides two escorts. Taking escorts with you on the walk in addition to the guide which you pay for in the activity fee is universal to all activities you would conduct in Bwindi. This includes all nature walks and even birding. When Gorilla tracking expect to take as many as 5 escorts.

The escorts are indeed armed with AK47's. There primary task is of course your safety but they are also there to ensure you do not involve yourself in illegal activities like unofficial Gorilla Tracking.

During my walk we passed Batwa people on the forest trail. The forest trail is a well defind path and used by local people to travese the forest.

We have just returned from a trip to Uganda, and My God what a fantastic trip it was.

We were on a tight budget and after comparing several options decided the suggestion above would be best.

We got in touch with Robert (whoever is contemplating anything in Uganda must DEFINITELY talk to this man - or anyone on his team for that matter!) and he could not have been more charming and helpful. In fact we left our whole 10-day, 6-strong trip in the capable hands of Robert & team, and they concocted an unforgettable journey.

The walk from Buhoma to Nkuringo, and the subsequent trek to Kisoro were absolutely fantastic - a highlight of our journey. The campsite in particular was magical. There's little to add to the above as it aptly describes what we experienced - a really helpful and enthusiastic team, a simple, joyful night out and absolutely breathtaking scenery all around.

The full team of Asgario, Sipi, Lydia - we could not thank them enough. They knew EVERYTHING (nature, logistics, birds, photography, etc. etc.), and they were ALWAYS helpful. We even got free private photo tuition from Robert!

Whilst with delay, we would like to add up to the earlier contribution of Alexander and Marie and emphasize how magical this trip has been for the entire group. Having some experience with safaris and travelled to Africa quite a few times, we have to say that the atmopshpere we discovered on the road from Buhoma-Nkuringo-Kisoro was quite unique and absolutely exceptional, both from the landscape as well as from the emotions you get just from walking on that remote track, and the night spent in Nkuringo with Rob's team. Rob Brierley and team were of great support, both in setting up the trip and on-ground, leaving room for us to live through the trip as if we (almost) had organized it by ourselves. If you plan a trip there, get in touch with them!

As for the other locations where we spent time in Uganda, we would warmly recommend Ishasha Wilderness Camp (and the Ishahsha National Park), Mihingo Lodge at Lake Mburo National Park and if your budget allows (to fly there) Kidepo - in the border of Sudan - which is definitely quite a unique experience.

I must also express (for tose who wonder) that we felt absolutely safe for the duration of the trip. It simply couldn't have been better.

I have just returned from a trip to Uganda and Tanzania and as part of the trip trekked from Buhoma through Nkuringo to Kisoro. I have to say, this was the highlight of my adventure through East Africa.

I also used the services of Asigariyo, a guide for Nkuringo Walking Safaris (www.nkuringowalkingsafaris.com). Asigariyo was amazing, exteremly friendly and knowledgeable. He was able to identify the plants, animals, and all of the birds that we encountered during the trek while telling stories about the local culture and history of the surrounding areas. All of the staff of Nkuringo Walking Safaris were fantastic and able to help me with ever aspect of the trip, from planning my time and budget to arranging transportation and accommodation not only for the Bwindi area but throughout Uganda. These guys really know their stuff and can really make sure that a trip to Uganda will be an amazing experience. The staff even helped me to get a gorilla tracking permit on short notice! I cannot say enough good things about the quality of service they provide.

In addition to trekking from Buhoma, through Nkuringo, gorilla trekking, visiting the local Botwa community and continuing onto Kisoro, Asigariyo and I also hiked Mt. Sabinyo, which marks the boarders of Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. All together, this was an amazing adventure that I will never forget.

We walked from Buhoma to Kisoro last January and it was the highlight of our trip to Uganda!! We booked with www.nkuringowalkingsafaris.com and I can highly recommend them!! Robert organised a very beautiful trip for us and our guides there (Ascario and Benson) were very helpful and experienced. Everything went very smooth and easy and we enjoyed it a lot!

It is very easy to get to Buhoma where you can start the walk (I would recommend to start in Buhoma and not in Kisoro, the view is nicer, because you have the volcanoes in front of you). If you have enough time stay one night in Buhoma, two nights in Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite (amazing view) and one or two nights in Nkuringo Safari Lodge on Lake Mutanda.

It is an beautiful experience far from the beaten track you will never forget.
