new airport -update

mindanews.com/top-stories/… CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews/26 February) – Bowing to safety and logistical concerns raised by the local business community, President Benigno Aquino III is no longer keen on opening the Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental this year, Gov. Oscar Moreno said Monday.

update today -DESPITE the opposition aired by several business groups in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental, President Benigno Aquino III vowed to open the Laguindingan International Airport on April 30, 2013. Aquino said the airport is now ready for operation and is expected to cater to at least 1.6 billion tourists who would help boost the economy of Misamis Oriental.

“In two months’ time, you will have a new airport,” he said during his visit at Xavier Ecoville in Barangay Lumbia on Tuesday.

Before visiting Xavier Ecoville, Aquino personally flew by chopper to Laguindingan to spearhead the soft opening of the airport.

The US$167.09 million (P7.853 billion) Laguindingan International Airport sits on a 4.17 square kilometers site in Barangay Moog, located 46 kilometers away from the Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro.

With the opening of the Laguindingan airport, Aquino said the Lumbia Airport will be turned over to the Philippine Air Force.

This is good news. The reason for possible further delay is that the new airport does not have any Insturment Landing System ( ILS ) at this time so incoming aircraft could only land by visual flight rules. Perhaps President Aquino after personally visiting, he will make sure the ILS requirements will be met in the time he has specified.

I look forward to landing at this new airport on my next visit as I am sure many others will too. Lets hope the April 30th fully operational opening will happen !

Thanks for the update.

Unless the '1.6 billion tourists' figure is referring to (say) the population of India, Philippines and Indonesia combiend, it may be a misprint.

This makes more sense now!

I was thinking it is an International Airport, why don't you open for international flights. What difference will it make to international flights about the location as there were no international flights to the old airport.

They should have installed the ILS before using the new airport!

Is an airport without ILS safe?

ILS is not really necessary just to open a new airport. They should open Laguindingan Airport even without ILS and continue with its daytime-only operations. Gold Coast Interntational Airport in Australia has no ILS, Palm Springs International Airport in California has no ILS, Naga Airport has no ILS, Legaspi Airport has no ILS, Surigao Airport has no ILS and Dipolog Airport has no ILS.

Laguindingan Airport is better located than Lumbia Airport because the runway sits on a plain and there are no mountain obstructing a pilot's view.

I think ILS will enable the airport to operate at night, is it?

If yes, this will be good as they may be able to bring more tourist to CDO.

Yup, ILS would enable planes to land at night and during low visibility if the weather is not good. Without ILS only "visual flight rules" would be needed just like what they are doing at Caticlan Airport.

Their reason not to open the airport just because of the absence of an ILS is simply unacceptable. Any airport would be still usable without an ILS. When the ILS of the extremely busy O'Hare Airport broke down, flights did not stop because they can operate as long as there's sunlight.
