I'm an American living in Paris (from NYC), and I have a Mozabite friend here, so I can help you with your questions. I think it's great idea to visit the place of your ancestors. For info, there is a Mozabite community in Montreal (they are dispersed across the US); you can fly directly to Ghardaia from Montreal or fly London/Paris-Algiers-Ghardaia (1hr45 minute flight).
My friend is interested to know: do you think you might have family remaining in Ghardaia? Would you have a name of a father/mother/grandfather/grandmother? Do you know from which city in M'zab your family comes from? (They are: Ghardaia, Melika, El Atteuf, Beni-Isguen, Bounoura, Berriane, and Guerrara). In any case, it is sure that you will be welcomed in M'zab. The Mozabites have a very strong culture and I think that once you establish contact with the community, you will have a guide to introduce you to the life of your ancestors. So, you will definitely have a chance to learn some words of Mozabite, sample the cuisine, meet people....visit a real oasis!
My friend (he speaks French so I'm the translating go-between) would be happy to see if you have any "lost family" or give you more details about the particular city your ancestors come from, or answer any other questions you have.
