How safe is Venezuela ? Crime up or down?

We are thinking of overnighting at a hotel by the international airport and then taking a taxi to Morrocoy for five days. Family with three teenagers. I was wondering if the level of crime has been going up or down over the last years. Should you request the driver has an assistant for security reasons?

Jane, Venezuela is perfectly manageable for people with the right information, and you came to the right place for it. If you plan everything ahead (airport pick-up, hotel, transfer to Morrocoy, posada in Morrocoy with boats to the islands, transfer back to airport, etc.) or if you a have a local knowledgeable contact you'll be absolutely fine. Of course the easiest advice is the one you got from the previous posters: "Don't go, it's dangerous. Go to Spain AGAIN and AGAIN", but as a Venezuelan-American traveler and local travel expert and advisor, I tell you, Venezuela is one of the most interesting countries you can visit.

Sorry about the non-helpful advice from the other two posters. Personally, I hate when people tell me "don't go" instead of "how to go". As a traveler, I don't take NOs, and I've enjoyed the world over without a casualty, except in Las Vegas, where I got a camera stolen.

There are a few airport pick-up services in the city. I know a trustworthy driver that I can share with you, who has a supervised pick-up. You can spend the night at a wide variety of places in Caracas, near walkable areas and malls, and enjoy some GREAT local food, and the next morning leave early to Chichiriviche or Tucacas, where you can stay in a posada, such as Balijú (I stayed in that one - it's middle of the road. Nice yet not expensive) that includes all-meals and boating to the islands. Have a look at the posadas of chichiriviche www.posadasyplayas.com/index.php… and feel free to message me for help.

This is kinda personal. I have a point to prove to the above nay-sayers... and your future posts on the splendid time you had here will be my pay for my knowledgeable assistance.

By the way, I'm alive, and so is my wife... and I've been living here permanently for over two decades! ;) Venezuela is great for travelers, not so much for dumb tourists, which I am sure you are not simply because of your interest in coming.

Cheers!

Thanks Nelven, at the moment we are delaying because it was over the new year/three kings period and looked like it was all going to be too crowded.

Better take a hotel in Macuto so you avoid being in Caracas.

Most of the crime is not targeted at tourists. However muggings can occur so be careful. Use your common sense.
