I totally agree with your comments on Los Roques, pretentious and not at all authentic. Far better if you are in the Canary Islands to go for Canarian food or at least Spanish.

Yes I would agree, seems this place has been overtaken by its own publlicity instead of talking through it's kitchen. Ate there the 29th of Feb. Wanted to be impressed somehow but was let down by full of themselves Italian waiting staff who don't actually listen to what you ordered.

Black bean under the lobster was reduced to sludge. My partner received the wrong fish dish (albeit she thought it was nice). The wine was fine I thought but most Mainland Spanish restaurants would offer better quality and value. Decor ambience is good cant knock it.

Cost 130 sterling for 3 full courses and 2 (good) btls of wine for two and 2 cocktails. Not Michelin but maybe the manager sees a few of these comments and the Italian guys get re motivated by the boss.

Oh and I did say all this before I left.

Well, I'm not going to join the "Los Roques bashing" but speak as advocate. I've eaten here regularly (but not frequently) for the last 18 months or so.

Like any restaurant it has it's off days - I've been served cold food once and had a wrong dish at the table once across 7-8 visits with tables of 2-6 people. But generally it's excellent food and service and good value - though admittedly not as cheap as other local restaurants.

As for "authentic", how authentic is any restaurant like this? Is as authentic as Chapter One (a restaurant with a star in Dublin near where I live) whose menu could receive all the same criticisms ("taken straight out of the menu of a typical French restaurant")... What do you expect at this level? Should all restaurants in Tenerife be Canarian?

It went through a bit of a dip a year or so ago, but is shining now. Any problems ask for Peter - he's the tall waiter and is actually the owner, though won't tell you this unless asked.

As for the Michelin thing, they're rightly pround of it, but Peter said something interesting to me last time I was there - we were chatting abouty restaurants generally, and it was an off-the-cuff comment, so I think genuine. He said "I'd rather have happy regular customers than a star".

As for the Italian waiter, I was there recently, he's gone. I agree, he was a pain. "He decided to move on" said Peter. I think he was booted, for all the reasons above.

For me, I'll continue to enjoy eating there. It's not exactly convenient - a 20 min cab ride each way for us - but worth it - there's nothing else like it on Tenerife.

Interesting. We're booked in here (or rather some friends have reserved a table and we're going with them) next week. They say it's good but after reading this I wonder!

Is it true Clarets has closed?

Yes, Clarets in Chayofa is up for sale. Must admit I never liked it, especially last winter when they had no heating on and offered my friends the use of their waitress' coat to keep warm. Needless to say they walked out and went down the road to the Cantabria.

What was it about Los Roques you didn't like, and where else would you recommend? We're here for a few weeks and want to try a few places - if Roques is no good we'll only be going with our friends.

I haven't been to Tenerife for years - last time I was here Clarets was quite good and El Patio was the place to go.

Le Bistro d'Alain is home to some of the finest French cuisine on the island. The whole ambience is intimate and romantic and the service very attentive. It's recommended that you phone to reserve a table.

We've now been to Los Roques (as mentioned with friends) and it was good enough that we're going back. I'll post more comments after we've been again but at the moment I'm suprised by the negative comments.
