Getting to Drake Bay

I am planning on visiting Costa Rica in February and would like to go to Drake Bay from Jaco. Is this possible? What is the best way to do so? I can also be coming from Montezuma if that is easier.

I'd choose Montezuma for a number of reasons over Jaco unrelated to travel logistics.

From Montezuma you can use the Tambor airport and fly to Drake Bay by way of SJO.

Flying into Drake Bay is the most common and recmmended method of getting there.

It's also possible to take a boat from Sierpe, which is a fun and scenic route, as well.

I personally don't recommend driving in...

I drive often to Drake Bay...to check in our farm around there...during the dry months Jan..Feb...Mar...Apr...is a nice ride...for some people maybe hard since they have no idea how is the road...or how to drive there...

In early December we drove a small compact 4x4 from Jaco over a few days via Sierpa, combined driving time would have been no more than 7 hours. Add an hour to that if you go along the paved roads to the Drake Bay road about 35 kms south of the Pan American Highway on Highway 245. The Drake Bay road is bumpy, steep and requires 3 small rivers be crossed as well as a larger river 4 kms from Darke Bay. The road is regularly used by 2 wheel drive 1 ton trucks delivering food and good to Drake Bay, as well as tour vans and local SUVs of all types. It is too rough for most cars.

Nature Air flies in once daily from San Jose.

Tours to the area leave daily from various towns along the coast. You can probably buy a one way trip with an operator. Boats leave Sierpa all day long for various points in the park and Drake Bay. You can get a scheduled bus to Sierpa. The boats and buses are safe and the road to Sierpa is paved all the way from Jaco.

9. Re: Getting to Drake Bay

Bruce has posted very detailed info about driving time from Jaco to Drake Bay. No, you cannot stay in Jaco and do the day trip to Corcovado NP! You can stay in Drake Bay and do the day trip to Corcovado NP and/or do the fishing trip. You can stay in Uvita and/or do the day trip to Corcovado NP and do the fishing trip.

10. Re: Getting to Drake Bay

You are looking at a long boat ride.... probably 3 hours each way in short choppy seas to get to Corcovado from Jaco. A day trip by car would not work at that distance, especially if you plan to do anything once you get there and have any energy to get back. You can probably get a tour to the park out of Jaco, but it would leave early and come back late and you would spend about 3 hours in a boat and 3 hours in a car or van. Manuel Antonio Park is closer and more set up for tourists who want to see wildlife quickly and with relative ease. Corcovado has lots of tourist visiting but not all come away with pics of crocs, Scarlet Macaws and fancy frogs. As for fishing, you can probably book something right out of Jaco and save the time and expense of getting to Drake Bay and going to sea from there.
