White Mountain trip report

My DH and I have just returned from a multi-day stay in Show Low. We left Mesa on Wednesday and stopped at the Matazal Casino for lunch. We discovered they have a buffet at lunch that includes beverage and dessert, very reasonable with the senior discount and good food. We were slowed but not stopped by construction on 260 below the Mogollon rim but were stopped for about 15 by construction between Overgaard and Show Low. Found the trailer we were renting, unpacked and did a bit of exploration and went to bed. We were awakened by the smoke alarm about 4am - evidently the furnace had not been used in a while and there was lots of dust to burn! Late that afternoon we went to Fool Hollow Lake Recreation area, set up our telescope and waited for dark then observed for several hours. Skies were good but there was a lot of light pollution - not as dark as we had hoped.

Friday we went back to Fool Hollow and hiked a good portion of the trail around the lake. Saturday we headed out to explore further east. First stop was Sheep's Crossing south of the ski resort. My husband had camped there 40some years ago and wanted to see what that area looked like now. We hiked aways up the West Baldy trail, a very nice hike. Then we checked out Greer. There are some burnt areas but they aren't very noticeable. We went on east then south to Alpine and Nutrioso. We didn't see as much burnt areas as we expected. We did go back on a side road just before we turned around, and noticed that several of the big homes we passed had made no effort to clear the brush around them. Stopped for dinner at McDonald's in Springerville - one of the worst ones we've been in!

Sunday we ate dinner at the China Wok buffet because Chinesse sounded good to us. Big mistake! then we drove to Taylor and Snowflake, stopping to take photos in Snowflake, and then went back to Fool Hollow to hike. This time we explored the spill way and the dam in sort of a loop hike. Getting to the dam was easy but coming back was an adventure!

By Sunday night we were feeling a little claustrophobic from the trailer so Monday we packed up and came back. The Show Low area was beautiful and we will probably be back!

Thanks for the TR! I love that whole area; it's so gorgeous and peaceful. I was wondering how you made out with your telescope; did you try any other area while you were there?

Glad you enjoyed your getaway. Thanks for the lunch tip at Matazal Casino. We have often wondered about that. Will probably stop next time. We have not been as far east as Alpine but do enjoy that entire area so much.

Hummingbird - the only clear nights were Thursday and Friday, and Friday we were too tired to stay up late again, plus the skies at Fool Hollow weren't as dark as we had hoped and we didn't locate any other place to set up.
