Show Low drivng directions

We're spending the night in Show Low on our way to a rafting trip on the Salt River off of route 60/77. What would be the best way to get there from Sedona? We'd like a scenic drive but also have time contraints. I imagine we'll be leaving Sedona around 3pm in late March if time of day makes a difference.

The best route is 260/87/260 from Camp Verde through Payson and up to Showlow. The drive will take 3-4 hours. It will be dark by the time you get there. This is all assuming that weather conditions are favorable. The other option is north to Flagstaff, across I-40 and then down 77 from Holbrook. This route uses the interstate which is generally safer to drive, is slightly longer and takes just as much time and IMO is less scenic.

I wondered about taking the 260 route; so thanks so much for suggesting it. My husband and I do prefer backroads. We had no clue as to the condition of 260 nor the extra time it might take to go that way; especially if the weather isn't good. If by slight chance (keep you fingers crossed)the weather is crappy then we'll have another day in Sedona as I don't think rafting in the snow would be very enjoyable. I can stay here in Ohio if I want to freeze. I guess we'll just have to pick the route later but its good to know that the interstate isn't the only way to get there. I've booked our lodgings for Sedona at the Sky Lodge along with the Broken Arrow Tour and at the Grand Canyon in one of the lodges in the park. Now my mission is to find a place in Showlow, any ideas? With just a week to run around we'll need a vacation to recoup!

Your plans sound good. Accomodations in Showlow are mostly basic. There's a Comfort Inn that I've stayed in that's close to Torreon where I play golf sometimes. And the HonDah casino on the other side of town is a good option too. Casino rooms are generally a good deal.

We stayed at the Best Western without problems. For the route on 260 from Camp Verde keep in mind it's a rather steep decend to Strawberry that can be tricky with snow but in good weather you won't have problems driving it.

The elevation differs on these different routes, and the weather will differ as well. However, if you are rafting the Salt River you should not encounter snow. Where does your trip begin and who is your company?

A good place for dinner that night is Licano's. It serves steaks and Mexican food. It's right on 260 in Show Low.

The intersection of routes 60 and 77 is in Show Low. The rafting trips typically get in the river in the Salt River Canyon which is about 60 miles from Show Low on Route 60/77 on the way to to Globe. That drive is also very scenic.

Thanks everyone for all the great feedback. We are rafting with the Salt River Rafting Company and have time to just do a one day trip. I'm not exactly sure where the put in is. When I made the reservation they said it is about an hour north of Globe or about an hour South of Showlow. We've decided to stay in Showlow and will be getting there in the early evening I'm guesstimating. From Sedona to Showlow is it really 4hrs via route 260 and about 2 1/2hrs. via route 40? 260 certainly looks more interesting but that is quite a driving time difference. I checked all the reviews here about motels and decided to stay at the KC. We only need a clean place to rest for the night and it has gotten excellent reviews with great rates. Any additonal info about our little journey is welcomed!

I don't think it's that much of a difference. I would count on 3 hours between Sedona and Show Low via I40 and 3.5 to 4 via 260. In march, starting Sedona around 3pm I would take the drive via I40. Not a bad drive either with wide open spaces and endless views on Painted desert.

Another alernative is to take Hy 260 and stop in Heber for the night. There's a nice Best Western there. It's a very nice, quiet little town in the forest. There are a couple of restaurants for dinner and breakfast. It's about 45 minutes before you get to Show Low so you could still have your pretty drive, get settled into your hotel in daylight, and have an easy drive in the morning.

There's really nothing to see or do in Show Low unless you just want to get a bit farther down the road. It's a bigger town, but it will still roll up the sidewalks at 9PM.
