Short Vacation Ideas

Wife and I (and an 8 year old) are thinking about a trip to Arizona, and we really have no idea where to begin. We'd be flying from Atlanta in early Oct for a 5-day trip and would rent a car to get around. We'd like to see as much of that part of the country as we can in that amount of time but we don't want to feel hurried either. We've been to the Grand Canyon before but only on a drive-by during a move MANY years ago. We'd like to see as much of the natural wonders as we can and perhaps the Hoover Dam as well (never been to Vegas). If someone would be willing to give us a sample itenerary, I would be so greatful! Thanks very much!!

Hi

With only 5 days you won't have too much time for long drives and we often recommend to visit Sedona, Grand Canyon and Page (Antelope Canyons, Lake Powell, Horseshoe bend etc). in that timeframe. In Page you also find a huge dam called Glen Canyon Dam. Easier and cheaper to visit than Hoover. Make your reservations for GC asa possible www.grandcanyonlodges.com I reckon you are flying to and back from Phoenix?

Thank you. Unfortunately, the GC Lodges are booked. Any alternatives for lodging? Should we stay in one hotel the entire time and do day trips? We are open to any destination airport, so Phoenix would be fine.

Best is to stay inside the NP. If all booked you can call for cancellation 888 297 2757 You also can stay just outside GCNP in Tusayan www.tusayanhotels.com I would not do daytrips from one location but relocate. GC to Page already can take 3 hours and 2+ hours from GC to Sedona.

Keep trying the GC hotline if you'd like to spend the night at the GC. But also make reservations soon for Sedona as Oct is prime season for the area. You may want to base out of Sedona and do a day trip to the GC. With 5 days, you won't see much of Sedona if you try to include Page and Vegas, and will spend a lot of time driving. Stick to the GC, Sedona and the Verde Valley. Check out Jerome, AZ, Montezumas Castle/Well, V Bar V petroglyphs, Oak Creek Canyon, Red Rock State Park, West Fork, and there is an almost unlimited hiking trails ranging from

easy to difficult.

If you could add a few more days to your trip, you would have time to see Page and may even have time to fly into Vegas instead of Phoenix. What hotels are you thinking about staying at?

Agreeing that for 5 days Sedona makes an excellent base. October is one of the most popular times in Sedona so booking accommodations there ASAP is essential. I also agree about continuing to try to get a room at the GCNP for one night. Keep calling 888-297-2757. Cancellations do happen and persistent callers often get lucky and score a room. Being inside the park for a single night will enhance your experience exponentially. As a ack up to the park, book a room in the town of Tusayan, just outside the park gate. Again, one night is sufficient. Sedona will give you more than you can imagine for the remainder of your time.
