Scenic route from Phoenix to Sedona.

Hello All-

We will be driving from Phoenix airport to Sedona. Is there a scenic route worth taking that would not significantly increase the travel time? I would say, not more than an hour or hour and one-half.

Thank you.

The normal route up I-17 to Hwy 179 is in itself fairly scenic. Alternatives will add more than an hour or two.

Agreeing. Take I-17 to Hwy 179. It's a very scenic route and the most time efficient. The drive will take just under two hours. There are other options to the east and west, but both will more than double the drive time. All are scenic.

If you have never been there before you will be amazed at how scenic the main route really is.

Taking the 'standard' route gets us in the 'mood' for Sedona, so by the time we exit 17 onto 179 we are just in awe. And I also think that drive just makes the 'entrance' to 179 that much more beautiful. We havent been to Sedona in 6 years, but we are going again in 6 years and we are thrilled beyond words!

We have a trip planned to watch a hockey game in Phoenix and then travel to Sedona. Wondering if it is a must to have a rent a car or are there buses or train that we could use if we did not want to use a car.

Is it easy to get around Sedona or do you require a car? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You'll need a rental car, for sure.

There is a shuttle bus to Sedona from PHX, but it's not particularly easy to get around in Sedona without a car. The shuttle is also so expensive that, if you're traveling with two or more people, it's typically much cheaper to rent a car and drive yourself.

IMO, the most scenic route from Phoenix to Sedona - which WILL add an hour or so to your trip - is drive to Wickenburg on 101 bypass and 60, then take 89 north through Prescott (AZ's first capital city) and then 89A through 'ghost town' Jerome - your view will be from desert to national forest to wide open high plateaus - it's well worth going this way.
