Yes, if you stop by the ranger station you can get a pass and information.
You could also get one at Bell Rock out of a machine.
The volunteers at the forestry service are friendly and helpful (plus there are some neat souvenirs), and it is a great place to take your first pictures of Bell Rock.
Going further down Hwy 179 Bell Rock is a nice place for a hike. It's pretty easy, and there are three different lengths depending on how long you want to go.
If you get by Sedona by noon, you will probably check into your room first.
One lunch possibility is the Coffee Pot Restaurant on Hwy. 89 in W. Sedona. They have a wide selection of burgers and salads. There is also a McDonald's further along the way if the children get to vote.
The views from your hotel/that area are awesome.
In the past I recommended Airport Mesa. You'd go up 89 toward W. Sedona to get there. It has a beautiful panoramic view of Sedona which is very pretty. However it does get very crowded.
Hopefully others will make their favorite sunset spots known to you.
Another easy hike which we have done recently is the one at Yavapai Vista which is on 179, the Scenic Hwy, south of Sedona. There are good markers, and there is a good view of the red rocks on the opposite ridge from there.
Sorry if things are a little out of order. We have to load the car for Christmas dinner and go!! Also this computer won't let me cut and paste to change the order...
