Limited time: Routing around Salta+availability of taxis/bus

We are limited in time and need some advice on our routing in northwestern Argentina. We will rent a car in Salta and would be happy to get any suggestions:

Which of the following routes would you consider the most scenic?

Which are similar to each other regarding landscape (mountains, cacti, etc.), meaning that we could do one and skip the other in favour of another with a different landscape?

1. Salta - Cafayate

2. Salta - Cachi

3. Cafayate - Cachi

4. Cachi - La Poma - San Antonio de los Cobres

5. San Antonio de los Cobres - Salinas Grandes - Purmamarca

6. Salta - Jujuy - Purmamarca

7. Purmamarca - Tilcara - Humahuaca

And two last questions:

Since we plan to continue to Bolivia (Salar Uyuni) we are not sure whether it is worth to visit Salinas Grandes. Any opinions?

Would you do the routing Purmamarca-Tilcara-Humahuaca rather with a rental car or with public transport? This means is it the cities that are worth being visited or the landscape in between the cities which would then require a private car? Are there frequent buses beteween the cities so that we are not stranded for many hours in one place? Or are there taxis easily available in Purmamarca/Tilcara/Humahuaca which we could use? Would a taxi also do a longer distance (e. g. Humahuaca - La Quiaca)? Since we continue to Bolivia we thought about doing this part without a rental car, because it would take to much time to bring it back to Salta or Jujuy.

Many thanks in advance for any reply.

About the following routes: they are all completely different and will try to catch them in just one pictures. Personally I would recommend driving the complete loop.

1. Salta - Cafayate: flickr.com/photos/…

2. Salta - Cachi: flickr.com/photos/…

3. Cafayate - Cachi: flickr.com/photos/…

happy travels

Personally, your itinerary is a little difficult!!!!!!!

I would go Salta - Cafyate

Cafayate - Cachi

Cachi - Salta....

Salta - San Antonio de los Cobres -Salinas Grandes - Purmamarca and furhter north, But... La POma - San Antonio de los Cobres is really bad road, even with a 4x4 there is no much traffic there and so much risks...

Be careful. Do not take risks remember it is still raining and slides are possible this time of the year.

Dear Melody1508, like Giena said I would do the loop Salta, Cachi, Cafayate and back to Salta with the rental car, but take it easy, one day Salta Cachi , the next one Cachi Cafayate and the last one Cafayate Salta, distances here looks no so big in the map but the driving is not that easy.

In the north you can visit the area by bus but of course the bus or remis won't stop for you to take a picture, anyway you have more public transport between the towns.

Don't miss Purmamarca and the Salt Flats in Jujuy Province!

Enjoy your travel.
