We are limited in time and need some advice on our routing in northwestern Argentina. We will rent a car in Salta and would be happy to get any suggestions:
Which of the following routes would you consider the most scenic?
Which are similar to each other regarding landscape (mountains, cacti, etc.), meaning that we could do one and skip the other in favour of another with a different landscape?
1. Salta - Cafayate
2. Salta - Cachi
3. Cafayate - Cachi
5. San Antonio de los Cobres - Salinas Grandes - Purmamarca
6. Salta - Jujuy - Purmamarca
7. Purmamarca - Tilcara - Humahuaca
And two last questions:
Since we plan to continue to Bolivia (Salar Uyuni) we are not sure whether it is worth to visit Salinas Grandes. Any opinions?
Would you do the routing Purmamarca-Tilcara-Humahuaca rather with a rental car or with public transport? This means is it the cities that are worth being visited or the landscape in between the cities which would then require a private car? Are there frequent buses beteween the cities so that we are not stranded for many hours in one place? Or are there taxis easily available in Purmamarca/Tilcara/Humahuaca which we could use? Would a taxi also do a longer distance (e. g. Humahuaca - La Quiaca)? Since we continue to Bolivia we thought about doing this part without a rental car, because it would take to much time to bring it back to Salta or Jujuy.
Many thanks in advance for any reply.
