Apartment in Palermo Parks Area - Safe? Convenient?

We are two ladies in our 60s, coming to BA in late October. The rental company we have booked with indicated we have to move to a different apartment. The new one is in Palermo Parks, near the Hospital Fernandez. Is that a good area? Will it be safe for us? Convenient to transportation, shops, etc? Thanks for any suggestions.

I can't speak to the area you're asking about, but what rental agency are you using? Telling you that you have to move to a different apartment may be just fine and an honest mistake or it could be an indication that you're booked with a problematic agency who uses bait-and-switch tactics. If you mention the agency you're using, there are many experts on this board who advise you.

Hi! I'm Argentinian and live a few blocks away from Hospital Fernandez. The area is completely safe; it's a nice, relatively quiet area. The hospital is 7 or 8 blocks downhill from the subway, but there are two avenues nearby where you can find buses going every direction and taxis. You'll be a bit far away from the areas tourists usually go to, and from shopping areas -although Alto Palermo and Paseo Alcorta shopping malls are close enough.

To sum up, you'll have to use public transportation to go anywhere interesting but you will be on a nice neghbourhood, safe at any hour, with green areas nearby, and not too much traffic. If that's what you're looking for you'll have a great time in BA.

The Hospital Fernandez is located in/near the Palermo Chico neighborhood.

It is a fantastic location, you can walk just blocks to a Parque Las Heras, to the malls ,cafes, restaurants and you can get around from there easily.

It is a great spot to base yourself in.

Unfortunately, it is not unusual for even the most reliable and decent of rental companies to have a change a rental schedule. The owners change their minds or neglect to inform the Agencies of changes - I think it is a real shame for a renter who thinks he/she has the apt. settled, and then has to re-group. Sometimes, however, one gets an even better apt. on the second round....this happened to us several years ago.

I love the general area you describe for this new location; and we will be staying in that neighborhood for the second time this year. You are near to the parks and to Evita Museum and cafes and restaurants and, and .....the zoo, the Palermo restaurants too.

As you do not give a specific address, I would suggest that you ask the rental agency about noise (this is always an issue in Buenos Aires) and learn if the apt. is facing the rear of the bldg. and on what floor, or if the windows are double pane. They will likely be honest, if it is a good company.

Enjoy your NEW neighborhood.

My wife and I stay in that neighborhood anytime we can, most often in an apartment located less than two blocks from Hospital Fernandez. We are in our early 60's and find the area safe and convenient. The Evita museum is in this neighborhood and the Malba museum adjoins the area. So does the zoo. The Japanese and Botanical gardens are close by. Taxis, buses and the subway all provide convenient transportation to Recoleta and other tourist destinations.

Thank you all for your responses. We are dealing with Friendly Rentals - and at this point, we think they are being straight with us. Apparently there is construction around the apartment we had rented, so they are upgrading us to the Verdi apartment in Palermo Parks.

We are looking forward to our stay there at the end of Oct. through early Nov.

Thanks to all!

That apartment looks lovely. The location is excellent, on Cabello .

There are so many nice little cafes and bakeries and shops around the area, close to the apt. Easy to grab a taxi or a bus .. Buses are on Las Heras.

I think you will be happy there :)

We recently lost an apartment rental we'd been about to book that day. My husband went online just to have a final look at a photo of one room and so discovered that our rental dates had overnight become unavailable! He 'phoned the rep right away. The rep was sure there must be some mistake. She was as surprised and disappointed as we were when she checked and found that what he'd seen was correct. She works for an established agency and apologized sincerely.

Later, when I looked at the website myself, I noticed that other 5-7 periods had also simultaneously overnight become noted as unavailable - at a rate of almost one per month from August to December inclusive although it was now September! The day before, there'd only been two separated 5-7 periods showing as unavailable throughout these 5 months. It may be, then, that the owner suddenly decided to not let this apartment for all the periods now blocked out or had failed to let this agent know that the place had been booked for all those periods by another agent. From the dangling days that were still available here and there each month, it wasn't the case that the place had suddenly been rented on a long-term lease.

What I saw would indicate that agents stand to lose too and even more than one visitor might should an owner not update in a timely manner an agent with whom he has listed a property.
