I recently flew to Iguazu and back on relatively short notice. I prefer to fly LAN because of frequent problems with strikes and other issues that cause cancellations and delays on Aerolineas. I visited the LAN office on Cerrito between Santa Fe and Cordoba (sorry, I do not remember the exact address) and checked fares.....

1. Fares for foreigners are higher than for residents.

2. Fares for foreigners are lower or higher depending on the day you want to fly... By checking different dates, I was able to fly for 758 pesos round trip vs an 1121 peso fare a day earlier.

3. Fares are not less when purchased in Argentina. I found a fare of U$204 on the LAN website for the dates I needed to fly.

4. I checked with two travel agents before I went to LAN....I asked for a package price including transfers and hotel.....and for a breakdown of rates. In both instances, rates via an agent were higher than booking seperately.....

5. LAN is a member of the One World Alliance....which offers cupons as part of a Fly South America program....fly to South America on a member airline and you are eligible to fly to other destinations within the continent at discount rates.....These cupons must be purchased before leaving the USA.....so I could not purchase cupons in Buenos Aires....

In all the confusion of juggling dates, the agent in Buenos Aires booked my return flight for the wrong date....which I did not discover until I arrived at the airport to return to Buenos Aires from Iguazu.....

The LAN Agent simply shrugged, said "don't worry" and changed my flight.....30 minutes later I was on my way back to Buenos Aires....

Meanwhile, all Aerolineas flights for that day had been cancelled......

Fly LAN.....

Dr D is right on... if you have a choice, fly LAN.

Yes, avoid Aerolineas Argentina like the Plague. They are constantly on strike, late, etc. I only fly them when I absolutely have to but there is no reason to fly them on international long haul flights. LAN is excellent.

I loved when LAN Argentina joined the one world alliance and I actually got miles for my American Airlines frequent flyer program.

For all of you that come down to Argentina at least a few times a year, do yourself a flavor and establish yourself in a frequent flyer program. You can sign up for American Airlines and then request a Platinum Challenge and from most places in the USA you can make Platinum in one trip to Buenos Aires and back. then you automatically get 100% bonus miles to/from Argentina. So one trip yields you 20,000 miles. 2 trips is 40,000 miles and a free trip!

I haven't had to do for many many years as I fly so much but it's nice for people that don't know about it. It will also enable you to use the VIP Lounge when traveling internationally and cue up in the First class line at the airport.

LAN is much better than Aerolineas anyday of the week...

DEFINITELY fly LAN. More likely to depart on time, and less likely to be on strike, shorter lines at the airport, plus you can check in online.

Yes, but............ I have booked all my internal Argentine flights on LAN for travel in January, including a flight from Ushuaia to El Calafate on 15 JAN. LAN have now cancelled that flight and, without consultation, re-booked me on the next available flight - 18JAN. Unfortunately that would mean I would miss the tour I am joining in El Calafate. The earlier LAN flight departs on 13JAN, so I can't take that because I'm still on my cruise. I have no choice but to 'cancel' the booking that I did not make for 18JAN and I am to be hit with a cancellation fee. Que?

I am now booked on Aerolineas on 14JAN and have my fingers, toes and everything else crossed that the flight will travel as per the timetable.

The joys of travel! :-)

In 5 trips to Argentina since 1998, we have never had a problem with Aerolineas!
