Constantia Restaurant Recommendation

My husband and I are visiting Cape Town in March 2013, staying at the One and Only. We are already booked into the The Graff for lunch in Stellenbosch but wanted to also find a lovely restaurant, with possible vineyard tour around the Constantia area. Any ideas? Budget not an issue.

Hi

Well you are spoilt for choice in Constantia.

La Columbe gets fantastic reviews, which is at Constantia Uitsig

At Groot Constantia, there is Jonkerhuis, more informal, and Simon's which is more formal

At Buitenverwachting, there is a restaurant, which has an Austrian influence from its chef. They also do very good picnics

Then at Steenberg you also have two restaurants - Catharinas, which again is fine dining and Bistro 1682.

If I had to choose, then I would pick Bistro 1682. This is excellent Bistro style food, but you can ask for a table outside, which looks out over the vineyards and up to Table Mountain.

I am not aware of any vineyard tours that would coincide with lunch, but you can do a tasting at all of them. Again my favourite is Steenberg.

If you want fine dining, then La Columbe would be your best choice.

You will find fine dining very affordable in SA, compared to the Uk

Happy eating!

There are also two lovely restaurants at Cellars Hohenhort, the Greenhouse and the Conservatory, both excellent and in beautiful grounds.

For a relaxing change, have a picnic at the beautiful gardens at Buitenverwachting. You can do a wine tasting beforehand to allow you to decide which wine to drink with your lunch. You will need a reservation, mine's already made for early March.

Failing that, Cape Point vineyards are also doing picnics. I tried it in March & it was most satisfactory. Drink a bottle of "Splattered Toad" & support the local toad escorts who assist the toads crossing the roads. I even came away with a donated wine cooler.

Had an amazing dinner at 5 Rooms Restaurant at the new Alphen Hotel.

The pre-drinks in the hotel's trendy Rose Bar was also great.

You must try La Colombe on the Constantia Uitsig vineyard, you can also try Buitenwerwachting which has sublime views of the Constabntiaberg Mountain across it's vineyards or Bistro 1682 on the Steenberg vineyard. La Colombe is consistantly in the top ten restuarants in Cape Town and indeed South Africa and Bistro 1682 probably should be. Warm regards, Mike@Dongola House
