Cape Town city centre riots 30 Oct 2013

The informal settlement occupants protest descended into riots yesterday, effectively closing down the city centre for 6-7 hours as shops & restaurants closed early to avoid further damage & looting.

The protesters, informally known as the "poo" protesters for closing down the N2 earlier this year by throwing human excrement at motorists on the N2, are demanding electricity & proper plumbing in the numerous informal settlements around Cape Town.

Not the best advert for an already struggling tourism industry at the start of the tourist season.

The next protest march will consist of up to 250,000 people. Is this a precursor to next year's elections?

Are you suggesting tourists avoid South Africa as the elections approach?

I hope that the housing crisis is resolved in SA, but also that the protesters protest with dignity -I'm sure that numerous "genuine" protesters are furious with the anarchists who hijacked their campaign..

These flare-ups happen every so often.

There were a small number in the years we lived in Cape Town, which included an election year.

They tend to die down again as quickly as they come although damage to premises is not unknown.

Unfortunately, the disappearance of apartheid hasn't led to the disappearance of economic apartheid as quickly as the populace might like. And marches through the city centre are the most common way for the have-nots to voice their displeasure at the ruling parties. Sadly, these do have the tendency to turn violent.

I certainly wouldn't say tourists should avoid SA. Just be aware of local events and avoid certain areas if need be. It used to be said that every 8 tourists created 1 job so the more tourists, the better the opportunities for economic upliftment.

@Bushkid - it sounds like SA is in trouble despite significant rises in its Human Development Index. Sorry to hear about your friend.
