Requirment for a car in Cape Town

Hello, we are thinking of staying in Camps Bay for 4 nights, moving on to the winelands for a couple of nights and then travelling the garden route.

So we will be getting car hire but wondering if we can save some money by not having a car while we are in Camps Bay. So the questions are;

Is the waterfront in Cape Town within walking distance of Camps Bay

What is public transport like in terms of getting us around the area to visit different towns

Hi

Public transport is not really an option. Taxis are expensive.

You really can't walk anywhere from Camps Bay except to the next beaches.

The Waterfront is about 15 min by car, depending on traffic from Camps Bay.

I would suggest that you keep the car, or failing that look for accommodation closer to the Waterfront.

Camps Bay is not that far from the City Center and is only about a 15min drive apart. With that said, taxi's are not that expensive and goes between R9 & R11 per kilometer. So from Camps Bay to the City Center, Waterfront and Table Mountain you can easily pay between R50 & R80 one way and most of the taxi's can seat up to 6 passengers in their vehicles. But when you want to go further out from Camps Bay, like Houtbay, Chapmans Peak Drive, Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, Bolders Beach, Simons Town etc, then i would recommend keeping the rental or getting the rental for your stay in Camps Bay. For that distance you don't want to make use of a taxi.

A rental car is really the most flexible and as mentioned above you need the car to get "out of Camps Bay". You would be saving money on the wrong side because then you will need to pay for tours, taxis etc and car rental gets cheaper the longer you have it.

The city sightseeing bus does stop in Camps Bay so you could get to see all the tourist attractions with the sightseeing bus and you can get on and off where you wish. You can buy the 2 day ticket which practically gets you everywhere around Cape Town but it does not go as far as Cape Point.
