Do you need an automatic or happy with a manual? And what would you call a small family car? Toyota Corolla or similar?

AVIS has the International Visitors Special.. http://www.avis.co.za/main.aspx?ID=920

But the least expensive automatic is the Class 'D', the Volkswagen Polo Classic. It would be a little over 30GBP per day it looks to me. Not to start a new argument about insurance coverage here, but it does include what I think is all the insurance you need for normal driving.

I suspect there are cheaper options. Maybe someone will come forward with choices for you.

I did a bit of research for a one week hire two weeks ago, and the best was aroundaboutcars...just search for car hire on this forum and you'll get other suggestions. One thing to think about is getting something big enough to fit all your luggage in the boot, as some travel insurance policies won't cover you if stuff is stolen from the car which wasn't in the boot, which is a pain if you are parking anywhere en route between destinations fully loaded

Manual transmission from AVIS for the same car, a nice 4-door POLO with all the necessary features would be about 6 1/2 GBP less per day. Why AVIS? Tremendous presence around the country.
