Hiya,

I am looking at our flight options and there seems little difference in price or flight times between South African Airways and British Airways on the London - Jo'burg route. Can anyone tell me what differences there are between the two? Which ailine do people prefer? Positives/Negatives of either one.

Thanks very much in advance

Personally, I would fly SAA - the colours on their on their planes make them a winner :-)

Seriously though, from my response you can see that there is really nothing to choose between them. Seeing you're from the UK, I would go for SAA - kind of an introduction to SA before you actually arrive.

But really, besides the accents of the flight attendants, there is little between them.

Hello Kyoto - we're just down the road from you!

We flew SAA and the one big downside was that we were allowed just 20 kg as opposed to 23 kg. I didn't realise how strictly it would be enforced, and we ended up re-packing at Heathrow, alongside a number of other people! The surplus we had to carry on the plane, as we were allowed two lots of hand luggage. Didn't quite make sense to me, as the plane had exactly the same weight - but as they were charging £35 per extra kilo, I wasn't going to argue!!

I expected SAA to be of a better standard than it was, although we did fly on the new planes.

HI,

Thanks for the thoughts. The 20kg rule is good info, Thanks. I usually travel with my young daughter, so 'borrow' some of her allowance!

Cheers

I agree with previous post. We too had to take items out of luggage and place into cabin bags, even though we were only over by 0.8kg (In front of everyone). Fortunately though because cabin luggage is 8kgs we purposely bought large bags and so was OK.

The leg room I thought was a lot less that I have been used to on B.A. but only flown B.A to teh USA so not sure if they chang for this flight. And also the in-flight entertainment I thought was rubbish, IMO.

We flew SAA for our internatinal and domestic flights and had no major issues (other than Johannesburg delays which can affect all airlines).

Because delays, etc... can occur, I always recommend using the same airline for all flights if you are traveling on a tight timed itinerary with multiple destinations....that way, if the airline has a flight delay, they would be responsible for rebooking all of your flights if needed. If you have extra days between cities, then I suppose it will not matter as much.

Thanks for this extra info. How long would be recommended as a sensible time allowance between arriving internationally at JNB and a domestic departure from JNB to George, factoring in immigration, baggage collection, transfer between terminals, and then domestic check in etc? I was thinking 4 hours as I would rather not hang around JNB airport too long.
