Pilanesberg safari tour operator recommentation

I'll be staying in Joburg for a weekend and I'm spending to do a safari tour in Pilanesberg. Can someone recommend any good operator for that area? Also, I only have one full day and I can't imagine that Sun City is interesting enough for me to take a side trip, am I wrong?

It depends if you would like a casino resort, there is plenty to do, but a full day would be recommended. It is like a mini Las Vegas. I think you would enjoy seeing animals in the Pilanesberg. Depart early around 6 am. and spend the whole day looking for animals in the park which is very scenic. You stop for lunch at one of the camps/hotels. I recommend Johan at www.africantimeout.co.za. He is a highly experienced safari guide who also does trips into Kruger National park as well as the Pilanesberg.

I suggest that you do the Pilanesberg full day tour. Then you also visit Sun City. You are only 10 minutes away from Sun City and just walk around for a couple of hours. You can have lunch at Sun City. Most of the time the animals are very lazy when it is very hot in the middle of the day. If you go to Sun City at 11h30 until 13h30 and then do the rest of the afternoon Pilanesberg again until 16h00 you have seen both places.

You are right :) So I'd give SC a skip... plenty casinos in HK, Palm springs and Chicago right? It is interesting to see though, and if you do have the time sure. But having 1 day only and then stopping at the Chameleon Curios en route, or popping into SC is wasting game viewing time, and not very bright if you are really keen on seeing wildlife. And you just never know when you are going to get that NG moment... i.e. when it is really hot then you might see the ele's go swimming. Johan recommended above will confirm that, he is pretty good. Your choice for an operator should be based on time spend in the Park, ability, common sense, experience and lastly your budget.

I suggest that you do the Pilanesberg tour and combine it with an open game drive in the afternoon. Then you have the best option. First of all you drive in our vehicle in the reserve. Have a nice lunch at one of the lodges and then go on an open Game Drive at 16h30. On these drives you have a better change to see the lions. This takes about 3 hours and you come back at about 22h00 in the evening. Then you have a very nice experience.
